Q's for the geared guys..... I need 5.29's and now!

Ok, I've been putting off the gears for long enough now. I'm going up to 35's from 33's so the factory gears gotta go. It's sluggish enough as it is. I'm looking to just go big or go home on this one, something I only want to do once so I have 5.29's in mind.

Q1- Will the 5.29's put it back to a "stock" gear ratio? I don't mind if it's more aggressive.

Q2- Got part #'s and a list of all the odds and ends for install?

This is gonna go down in the next couple weeks so I'd like to get all parts ordered ASAP so I can take it to the shop for the install. Yeah I said "shop".... gears are just something I don't feel comfortable throwing together!

5.29s might be a little tall for 35's...

I'm running 4.88's with 33's and it feels (from what I can remember 4.5 years ago) like stock.
My buddy has 37's on his 04 Taco with 4.88 gears and it's still got a ton of giddy-up.
I think 5.29's would be too tall for highway driving, plus I'd be a little hesitant about running a pinion that small.

But that's just my .02...

5.29s will put you over stock ratio. Call 4WheelParts, they have really good gearing info and if you get a cool salesmen they might cut you a deal on a package, I think I ended up getting $300 off for everything when I did my Tacoma. If you do order from them get the lifetime no questions warranty, its only 10% extra and its great insurance.

Jon- order already geared diffs from ECGS(East Coast Gear supply) then do the swap and send them the cores once done. This is the easiest way since the 3rds come with the gears and locker already set up. They have a really solid reputation as well.

If you do a lot of highway driving I'd say just do 4.88s other wise 5.29s and don't look back, you love them. When I go to 35s I plan on 5.29s.

the 5.29s are recommended for anyone with a 35''+ size tire.

Thanks guys, I'm waiting on a response from them and 4WP. I take it these are the 7.5" diffs? I think I should go ahead and do a front locker too. I've been in several situations where a locker would've gotten me through instead of using the winch. Are the gears the same front and rear?

I've got 5.29's and 34's. I do a lot of in town driving so they work well for me. That said I may be changing them out soon for 4.88 and a slight tire change. If I were running 35's I think they'd be perfect.

The front is 7.5" IFS, the rear is gonna be the 8" V6/Turbo.

I would definitely go with 5.29s with 35s. I wouldn't recommend 4WP to my worst enemy. PM me if you want to hear about my nightmare with them. Do yourself a favor and go with ECGS.

If you think you want 5.29s, run around with the OD off for a few months and see if it bugs you. If not, go get 'em.

I had 3.00 gears in my old 66 Galaxie stock and when I turned into a race only car I gave it 3.73's and that was perfect. Could still drive it to the track but it felt like a whole new animal off the line. My Runner is already begging for gears with 33's so now I'm set on 5.29's thanks to everyones opinions.

Now if anyone has the part #s so I don't go ordering the wrong gears it'd be much appreciated

its already been stated but my 488 are a touch lower then stock with 35". run the online calculators. if i remember our overdrive auto trans ratio is .71. figure out the math of it and gear as low as you can put up with on the road. if i were to do it over id go 5.29 for extra control offroad

Don't quote me on this but .71 sounds realllllllllly high....top gear is usually around .99 or .98

But who knows, sure as hell not me hahha

Reading through this thread it only looks like one person actually has 5.29's with 34's. Big John, can you tell us what rpm's you're at on the freeway at say....65mph?

I'm running 35's and want gears but I also dont want to be at 3K rpm's on the freeway either.

According to the one I found, looks like 5.29's will put you at roughly 2400rpm's at 65mph. Might not be too bad.

My 97 t4r has 285's 5.29 and a at 70mph im running about 2500rpm's! The 5.29's are great on the interstate! No need to downshift! The in town driving is great also! The gas mph kinda sucks thou! But that could be cause my O2 is bad!
