Question for those with aftermarket HU’s in stock 10 speaker JBL setup.

I currently have an Eclipse AVN HU installed and I’m looking for ways to improve the audio quality out of the stock amp & speaker configuration and hoping to get some feedback on the following.

1) Do you find the amp underpowered? My eclipse has 5v pre-outs and the gain all the way up on the harness (+7db) and yet I still find the JBL amp underpowered. I also turned the volume on the stock deck up to 50 before removing, I'm not sure if it made a difference.

2) Before removing the stock JBL HU, I set all the fader, balance, tone etc to the middle settings. I also left the surround mode on. What settings did you use? I’m particularly interested in if you leave the surround mode on considering an aftermarket HU doesn’t have the ability to change surround modes on /off (from what I understand)?

I may experiment a little more with the stock deck settings, mostly turning surround off, then reinstalling the AVN to see if it has any effect. Maybe pushing less speakers will free up some power the amp can use for the door speakers.
