Question for you 5th gen owners

Hi everyone. I currently own a 99 Limited with 210k miles. It's still going strong but I have an itch to upgrade. I'm currently looking at upgrading into a 4th gen now (2007 V6 Sport) or waiting a few more years for a 5th gen to come down into my price range (about $15k-16k).

I've been reading a ton of reviews online about the 4th gens and, since it is an older vehicle, there are a lot of them . I basically know what I'm getting into with a 4th gen. The 5th gen, however, is a bit of a different story....

There are not a ton of reviews from consumers on the 5th gen, so I'm turning to you all. How do you like your 5th gen? Do you feel like it's the same Toyota quality that was present in the 3rd and 4th gens? Are there some of you who have upgraded from a 4th to 5th who would care to comment on if you are pleased with the switch?

I had a 3rd gen and got a 5th gen about 2 years ago... 3rd gen was better built in some areas, but 5th gen has better tech and comfort. 5th gen is much bigger and bulkier than the 3rd gen. Reliability still seems good, but material quality here and there has dropped off a bit. I feel 5th is a step up from 4th gen in most areas. 4th gen did have v8 option though... 4th and 5th are very similar overall.

They "all gens" have stuff we all wish we could pull from each gen , I really miss the tailgate from 2nd gen & there's stuff from 3rd I wish for , 4th was really a huge leap in the dual engine pkgs they offered . Having said all that I'm very pleased with 5th it's a box but it's my box ! Mostly good quality Toyota but you get some stuff every gen that Fs up . Can't go wrong on either 4th or 5th , but if I had my wish 09 sport/trail pkg V8 low miles in black !:violin:

I've had a 3rd, 4th and now 5th. The 5th is by far my favorite, but I have a '15 and standard options that seemed hard to find on used 10-13's. I would probably take a 4th gen over a 10-13. The only thing I miss about the 4th gen is the climate control.

I had a 4th gen which was a great vehicle. I absolutely love my 5th gen. I prefer the exterior design, the interior is more truck like, to me its better in every respect except the powertrain. I don't think you can go wrong either way

My 5th gen is a little bigger, feels more refined, definitely more luxurious than my 4th gen. I don't like the oil filter on my 5th gen or how lethargic the engine feels sometimes. I do think my 4th gen feels a little more nimble in the mountains and I feel I can see out of it a little better. I definitely like how the throttle feels in my 4th gen. I like the soft close tailgate on my 4th gen. In the end they are both good vehicles. I drive whichever one I feel like for the day.

If you can deal with the rear swing door, I'd buy a lightly used, late gen GX470, early gen GX460...

It will have superior creature comforts, fit and finish to a 4Runner and the v8 and be in your price range.
They're all surpringly affordable right now and most have barely been driven anywhere besides the mall and grocery store.

the aftermarket is there too since it's the same platform as the 4runner/ FJ... suspension parts swap over.

Owned my 97 for 16 years and purposely waited for the 4th gen and did not suite my needs (not big enough) then finally the 5th gen came out. Never buy the first model year so bought a 2011 and Love this truck. Now hopefully it will last as long as my 3rd gen did.

You won't get a locker in the GX... And no atrac in the GX470...

better is relative... that's up to you. just another option.

Off-road capabilities are in the majority of cases limited by the driver, not the vehicle... although having all the bells and whistles is cool it sometimes leads to a false confidence... If you have 4wd and a good set of AT Tires you can go pretty much anywhere your stomach will let you.

I recently replaced my 2008 SR5 with a 2016 TEP.

Some of the things that were easier on the '08 are not so on the '16, namely things like turning off the seat belt chime, etc.

The '08 offered more ease in replacing the radio, changing the oil, etc.


That said, the '16 drives FAR more comfortably and quietly than the '08, and it seems to give maybe three inches more height when stock.

My '08 is serving my FIL with great efficiency, and I love my '16.

this is some brutally honest truth

i bought my 2010 at the beginning of 2014 with 42,000 miles on it for $27,000. its now 2016 with 86,000 miles on it and its still worth $26,500 private sale. $25,500 trade in. When the appraiser looked it over when I got in to my accident, last summer, they appraised it at $32,000 cash value.

My parents still have a 2nd Gen with the tail gait, only downside that I can think of is you have to wait for the window to go down before you can open the door so there is a little wait. Other than that I like it better in every aspect.

I just added a 5th gen because we needed another vehicle but it was an addition to my 4th gen V8. The 5th gen is really nice BUT I would NOT have traded my 4th gen for a 5th gen. I think the 4th gens are the BEST gen. Just great build quality and strength.
