Question on 33's

If you plan on regearing to at least 4.88's, then I say go for the 33's in a load rating D or C (Treadwright or Yokohama). 33's on stock gearing was frustrating for me on both trucks, much slower, and with the E rating, much worse ride. I recommend 32's in load range C running at 30 psi. Amazing off-road, great ride quality on road, cheaper tire, and MUCH less weight. This all translates to a less noticeable power loss.

My 285 75 16's on split 3 spokes rub like crazy with wheel spacers, but rubbed the UCA sitting on flat ground. My next route is a 2" body lift, the pinch weld mod will not work because the tires hit the fenders in the front, the rear would be workable as is if I spaced the bumpstops and trimmed the rear bumper.

Note: I have no sway bars on, I think if I did I wouldn't have this issue but it flexes so well without them. My truck sees a lot of flex on the trails here in CO. I couldn't justify limiting it when the whole purpose of the lift was to make it more capable.

I hear that the 3 spokes are marginally different than the 5 stars.

A little late, but I'll add my input:

I got 285 Duratracs with my stock 5 stars, 3" ToyTec Lift, no spacers, and stock UCAs. They rubbed the fender flares at full lock and in reverse, but with a little bit of trimming, it was minimal. UCA would occasionally rub, but nothing too bad, and the frame also a small amount at full lock.

You'll probably be able to run 285s with minimal trimming if you run that body lift. At that point, spacers are pretty much just an aesthetic thing...

I feel that rubbing is different for everyone, so it's hard to exactly what will happen for you!

I've got 2ish inches of suspension lift and in order to fit my 285's I had to hammer down the pinch weld because they rubbed like crazy on the front. I already had 1.5" wheel spacers so I didn't have to worry about the UCA. I also have a cbi front bunper so I didn't have any issues with that rubbing. The backs rub when fully stuffed but I haven't done anything about that yet. I live in OK which is pretty flat and honestly I don't notice a huge difference from the stock 265/70R16's as far as power. My gas mileage on flat highways did drop from about 21-22 to 19. City is around 17.

I run 255/85/r16 (31.7") and don't rub anything. I still get 20mpg highway but I drive like a granny. They give me plenty of lift. They are skinny so you save on wheel weight and rolling resistance. I ran it stock but have around a 15.-2" lift now.


 
Setup in my signature runs just fine and didn't start rubbing until I pulled the front sway bar off (busted link) and even then it rubs just a small amount on the front fender flare. Nothing an exacto knife can't solve. Stock 5 star wheels.
 
On my '97, I've had 285/75-16 Druatrac's on it for about 4 years now. Only fitment mods were to flatten the pinch weld, 1" body lift, and '99 springs.

5-speed with stock 4:10 gears gets 18.5mpg religiously. Just turned 200k this year.

I'm running 285s on mine. A 3" lift and 1.25" wheel spacers cleared everything great. I had very minimal rubbing when the tires were brand new at full lock but everything works great now

Ditto Here. I also have flattened pinch welds and slightly shaved front flares/valance.

Did you mean you have 235/85/16 because a 255/85/16 is over 33" tall?
 
Its all about the 305/70r16. I rub a little, but its well worth it. Ive been able to pull 19mpg on a 1000+ mile trip, all highway, no mountain passes. The look just sets the truck off. I like em thick, never was a skinny chic guy!

Guys - be aware the 5 stars are 7" wide rims, and most tire manufacturers require a 7.5-8" wide rim for anything larger than a 265. Most shops will refuse to mount a 285 on a 7" wide rim. This is not something to ignore (for your safety and the safety of the rest of us).

OP: With this in mind I'd stick with the 265's, unless you are ready for new rims.

I wonder how the 100's of folks on here got there rims mounted on there stock 7" wide wheels? I know members and locals that run 35's on there 7" wide tires. I have only had one "shop" not mount the larger tire. That was Walmart. He wont need new rims. Bad advice. Just like the walmart that said they wouldnt mount.

No, bad advice is telling someone (who may not be knowledgeable enough on this topic) that there is no risk, and failing to advise them of the manufacturers specified requirements.

I know they are there for a reason but there are literally tens of thousands of tires running on wheels that are narrower or wider than what's recommend with absolutely zero issues. Half the members on this site break that rule with no issues. Nearly every member on this site breaks the manufacturers rules and recommendations when it comes to vehicle safety by lifting the vehicle, bigger tires, etc but no one says a word about that. But someone wants to mount a tire that is technically to wide for the wheel and the safety police come out of the woodwork. Happens on every forum I'm on.

Your in an offroad forum and you stated that running larger than stock tire size is not safe and he must get new rims. Also stated most shops will not mount the tires. BAD ADVICE.

Yes your right on the specs sheets. And thats why Walmart wont mount a tire outside the sheet. You must work there. Good stuff.

Bugman you have a valid point, but I think its more an issue of tire profile which could maybe result in irregular tire wear. Tire companies don't want to have to deal with tire wear complaints caused by this. In terms of safety, a given tire is actually less likely to come off of a narrow rim than a wide rim.

Now, if we're talking the ridiculous 808 tire stretching shit, thats a different story, but running a rim that is 0.5 or 1" narrower than recommended isn't going to make any difference.

I have been talking with a guy near me and he is saying just to go 32s' and agreeing with Absalom that 265/75/16s are the easiest on your suspension and mileage.

If I do GO with the 265's and decide to lift it higher than the 3 inch suspension (1.5 inch body?) They are gonna look tiny right? My head is just about to explode with all this freakin tire info :boom:


Conclusion - 265's - Easier on the truck...and gas..

285's - Never hear any complaints on breaking anything?? Or am I just missing that thread lol. Only complaints on 285s is rubbing? Stressing the suspension? Power on motor?

Is the 75 in the middle of the dimension the width of the tire? If so, is a 265 and a 285 the same width? Sorry If i am asking redundant questions, I just want to be sure in the decision that I go with will be the only tires I buy in the next 2-4 years.

265 = 265 mm width of the tire
75 = It means that the height of the sidewall is 75% of the width of the tire. In the case of a 265, we're looking at a 198.75 mm sidewall height.
16 = diameter of the wheel in inches (which is 406.4 mm).

so a 265/75R16's dimensions are roughly 10.43" wide and 31.65" tall (sidewall x2 + Rim diameter).
