Question - Recommendations for alternatives to BFG KO2?

Hi All

Good evening...!

So my wife's daily driver, a 2018 ORP, has reached 50K+ miles now and I would need to replace the tires. I had it installed with BFG T/A K02 from the dealer when we bought it new... Thus am looking for comparable alternatives.

We do a light to medium off-roading and/or overlanding a couple of times per year, thus, maybe something for economical than a KO2...? Though price is not an extreme driver for the question; more of, what are the others out there?

I got some Toyo Open Country AT3's in the stock size... they seem nice.

Same amount of road noise as OEM but a different sound not louder really.

The Toyos are maybe $20-30 cheaper each than the BFGs if I remember correctly.

BTW - are you going with a standard load rating?

I would believe that an E rating is just overkill for the 4Runner although what is currently is "E" from the dealer.

+1 on the Toyo OC AT3, it's a great tire. E loads are hardly overkill for a 4Runner. I suspect 98%+ of people who suggest they are have probably never even ran an E load.
 
Coming up on 50k miles and probably have another 10k left with current stock tires. I do little to no off roading and would like the aggressive look yet good daily driver.

Options after searching, all seem to be a good choice just personal preference. As for the E load its hit miss on rough ride it seems.

Once my KO2’s are worn down enough, I’ll be doing Falken Wildpeak or going back to Nitto Terra Grappler. I love the design of the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac, but tried those on my last truck and two were out of round so they warrantied them only for the two replacements to be out of round.
 
I’ve ran most popular AT tire over the years between the 4Runner and my truck. I have the Ko2 on the 4Runner and had never had an issue with them. On my truck I’m on my second set of Cooper at3lt. They’re not as aggressive looking but they’re way quieter, better in the rain and last longer. They come in a C and E just like the ko2.

E load rating is good if you do some serious off roading over rocks --not round smooth rocks, but rocks with corners and edges. The extra plys of an E rated tire stands up to those better than a lower rating.

I've owned several sets of KO2 over the years and like them. I currently have KO2 E rated on my 4Runner and find they are just as smooth riding and as quiet as the OEM tires.
 
I did 2 years of back and forth with tons of research but still felt uncertain when it came time. lol

I finally decided on Duratracs in a C load since i live on the east coast with some decent snow and rain. I also do some moderate off roading but didn't want to lose too much of my on road mannerisms, I also didn't want the additional ~10lbs of an E load burdening my 4R.

So far a great tire and really good wet traction.

I've gone through this 3 times. Stocks after 60k or so to LTX M/S2 for 60k or so and hated them. Put on KO2's C rated and went 91,000 miles! Just put another set on 2000 miles ago. I thought about switching to the Firestone Destinations or one of the other tires you are considering, maybe even a mud terrain, but after getting 91k on the KO2's how could I switch? I do a good bit of mixed driving around 100 miles per day and off-road a good bit during summer to get to those fishing holes. Remember a c rated tire may require an increase in PSI over the stock P rated tires. This affects the life of the tire a good bit. I run 44psi on my C's. Rotating every 5k is a huge deal on the more aggressive tread tires. Good luck!

Since you only do light to medium offroad, what about the Yokohama Geolandar G015?

Great reviews, did very well in testing, better wet traction than KO2s, and also comes in E rated if you decide to go that way.

Nitto RIDGE Grappler are a great looking tire and ride really smooth and quiet and are plenty capable off-road.

I went with Pirelli Scorpions. KO2s were my first choice, but I went cheap this round as it was for city driving. Sidewall/thickness and load ratings were something i wasn’t concerned with this time, but next time will be since Ill be spending more time off pavement.
 
General Grabber ATx, great tire, I put about 25k miles on them highway and offroading, they still look almost new. Good traction on dry and wet, medium on show, very good on dirt roads and rocks. Not a mud tire though.

I went with the LT (Light Truck) on stock size.
 
I put SL load grabber ATX's on mine right after I bought it. Fantastic tire. Just as capable at the KO's for a lot less. If they made an SL load in 285/70/17 I would be running them now. I'm not at all impressed with the snow performance of my current Toyo AT3's. And 20k in they are horribly chopped and sound like mud tires. Gotta get it on the alignment rack.
 
I replaced by BFG K02's with Toyo Open Country AT III's. Very happy with them in all conditions in comparison.
 
Another one for Toyo Open Country AT3. SL. I went up in size, but like them. Local to RH (Industry) if you want to try. BTW, you on CG? ;)
