Question regarding 5100's and 880 coils

Hello,

I have a 2002 4WD limited I use primarily to tow a small motorcycle trail and sport bike (no more than 1200 lbs total) and go on offroad car camping trips (no rock crawling or anything nuts) just standard trail stuff.

My truck has 150k miles and the suspension is showing its age, the car dives really aggressively when braking, has tons of body roll, handles like shit and is bumpy as hell too. I don't really daily drive it, but I want it to be somewhat comfortable when I do take it on trips.

As preventative maintenance I'll be replacing my LBJs, OTRs, UBJs and figured I might as well swap the shocks at the same time.

That said I wouldn't mind a small lift (1"-2" max) but I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what coils to pair with Bilstein 5100's

I was considering OME 880 / 906 but have read the OME coils don't pair well with the 5100s and can be too "stiff" other posts i've seem to indicate it's really just the 906's that are too stiff.

Can anyone please help recommend something for my intended use?

Thank you!

IMO it's a misconception that a 50-150lb spring rate difference like most of the options in the front will make any noticeable difference in ride quality - it's mostly the shocks that will determine what it will ride like.

I just installed the eibach 112-620 springs with 5100s (so going from 500lb/in to 620lb/in springs) and it's made a huge difference in ride quality. Has less body roll/dive/squat AND rides more comfortably.

I wouldn't recommend those particular springs as they've resulted in way too much lift (3.5" on the lowest bilstein perch setting), but I think any reports of "too stiff" are problems other than spring rate.

TL;DR recommendation- I think just choose the springs that give the ride height & load carrying ability you want, with those shocks it'll drive well whatever you choose.

Is the the general opinion of most people? Went down a rabbit hole now I'm considering new 99 springs all around

FWIW, I have a '96 with tundra 5100's + OME 881's front and 891's in the rear. I only have a factory rear bumper/hitch and regularly haul 300+ lbs. Handles like a truck ('cause it is). Iwouldnt hesitate to throw/haul even more weight with this set up. The only reason I sway in turns is because my links are all broken and I haven't replaced them yet.

It is a bit harsher ride, but not really. Depends on the owner and intended use. Took me FOREVER to settle on a setup. I don't rock crawl it...to extremes anyway. Some of the "roads" up in the high Unitas are pushing it, but this set up has handled them all.

I only daily this thing in the winter anymore. I have never felt lack of contact or control on snow and ice with this set up either.

Not a crazy lift either

880/906 with 5100's

I'm currently running this setup. On smooth road surfaces it handles like it is on rails. That said if you drive a lot on country roads it tends to beat you up a bit. If you decide to go this route be willing to let the springs break in, it took about 3k miles for them to settle. I've also ran 99 talls and prefer the OME solution.

What do you like about the OMEs more than the 99 talls did you run the 99 talls front and rear?

Different layout for dealing with taller spring on the driver side. Moderate lift running the lowest shock setting. Price $330 vs $600 for new 99 talls.

The 906 rear springs are the designed springs for the 5100's. If you read between the lines on the 5100 install directions, you will notice that they mention 220 lb/in 2" lift rear springs - the only ones on the market that match those specs are the OME 906's... The other options listed in the instructions are 1.5" rear spacers and no spacers (0" lift). Take that how you will...

The fronts are supposed to be factory springs. If you do go with lift springs, set the 5100's on the lowest height setting.

That said, other springs may work just fine for your purposes.
