Question unworthy of serious consideration, asking anyway.

This has always bothered me... shouldn't the image indicating the speed of the intermittent wipers be narrower at the top to indicate that the wipers are at the highest frequency of wiper speed (the smaller the graphic, the smaller period of time between each wiper swipe), and wider at the bottom to indicate that they are at the lowest frequency of wiper swipes (the wider the graphic indicating a longer period of time between wiper swipes)? It is the other way around.

I guess this is in the category of trivial issues Jeep owners don't deal with on their forums, ha. Happy Friday!

I've always thought the same thing!

Not only is it not trivial but I have also been bemused by this. Perhaps it is an inherently Japanese thing. Perhaps they believe that larger things finish quicker?

Wider at top since the frequency of wipes is greater (high wipes/min).

Lower at bottom since you have less wipes per-min.

Makes sense to me.:biggrin1:

You're thinking that it should represent the time between wipes....I think of it as the number of wipes over a period of time. Same thing with "fan speed dials". It is usually thin at low speed and thick at high speed.

It makes perfect sense to me. It a graphic of a tapered angle. As the angle gets greater the speed gets faster. On any X-Y axis (positive quadrant) as you go up or out you get more of whatever you are plotting. In this case speed intervals. Simple.

Slow fan = skinny
Fast fan = thick

Again it is revolutions/min, rather than time/revolution.

Alright, I do see the logic. I was a philosophy major so I am trained to look at things backwards as a rule... the fan argument was solid, really the most persuasive though was the new information that the wiper motors are gasoline powered!

Yup, certainly a unique perspective. But a very difficult one to make easy to understand or practical.

Think of a tachometer/rev counter in a car. It is very easy to understand that engine idle is 1000 rpm and redline is 7500 rpm (revolutions per minute).

The alternative (using these same figures) would be that idle is .06 seconds per revolution and redline is .008 seconds per revolution.

To make this work basically you'd need a clock that shows a time that gets smaller as you drive faster. This is pretty difficult to wrap your head around and comprehend, especially when we're talking about hundredths and thousandths of a second.

As a former Jeep owner, I am just happy to have intermittent wipers that actually work. My Grand Cherokee had automatic rain sensing wipers, one day they stopped working on intermittent. After about a year, I finally figured out it was because my windshield had a small crack.

When I got the windshield replaced the intermittent wipers started working again.

I love my Toyota.

Now you're getting it.

Right, well stated Knight-Errant, and you had me convinced for a minute that the way it is set up now is accurate. But in thinking further about your rev counter analysis, and the fan comparison, you have identified the crux of the issue. When you are looking for the proper intermittent wiper speed, you are not primarily concerned with the speed of the wipers per se, you are concerned with the amount of time between swipes. In fact the actual time it takes for the wipers to cross the windshield each time they are activated is the same each time. So, unlike rev counters, the primary purpose of the intermittent wiper graph is not to represent speed, it is to represent time! In other words, with intermittent wipers, a clock that shows a time that gets larger as the time between wiper swipes increases is the best way of telling you the information you want to know. Specifically, assume for example you are dealing with a very light mist, and you want a long period of time between wiper swipes. So, you look down at your intermittent wiper dial, and what do you want that graphic to tell you? You want it to tell you, which setting is going to give me the longest period of time between wiper swipes? It is counter-intuitive under these circumstances to choose the smallest part of the graph!

On a similarly annoying note, I did my monthly fast food indulgence this past Wednesday.

I came equipped with Burger King coupon #6172 which I got in the mail which states "FREE Whopper with the purchase of a Whopper sandwich.". Okay. I get it. BOGO

So I bought a Whopper meal #2 (sized medium) at regular price and said I have coupon #6172 for a free Whopper with the purchase of a Whopper.

He said "You can't do that. You have to buy a Whopper and then a Coke and then a french fry in order to do that".

I said "But I am buying a Whopper at regular price, I am just buying it along with the super-duper #2 all in one package".

Then a girl came on and said "Our registers are not set up to accept coupon code #6172 if you buy a meal, only of you buy everything separately". I think what she meant was ala carte but I was dangerously close to food being spit on territory here so I said "Okay, just give me the #2 meal, please".

Then another guy comes on and says "You don't want the free Whopper?".

I said "I do, but you said I can't, so I won't". I shit you not, this is all exactly the way it went down.

Then another guy gets on and says "I am the manager, can I help you?".

Great. Now I am on the microphone with the guy that manages these rocket scientists.

I said "I am driving up to the window and we can discuss in a quorum setting".

I get to the window and he says "I will give you the free Whopper my friend. The coupon is somewhat confusing".

So. Your little wiper blade situation here is minuscule in the whole scheme of things when you consider we are surrounded by people like the above. :-)

Happy Friday folks. :lookout:

Btw, that BK is going to kill you.

I have honestly never noticed these markings. I just reach up and twist the knob till the wipers are moving appropriately. I'll have to actually look at it tomorrow.

I would have to agree with the posters above though. Skinny for slow and wide for fast. If you've used a motor with a lever controlled throttle, like a lawnmower, you probably noticed that the turtle is at the skinny end and the rabbit is at the fat end.

I seriously never eat fast food but did that day because I was starving and only had about 20 minutes for lunch and I am still not feeling right 3 days later.

It will take a weekend of smoothies and homemade food to get my body to forgive me.
