Question - Vibration after Tire Rotation

I got my '17 TRDORP back in Feb and finally got to 5k miles. The tire rotation would have been no cost, but that would have also take 1/2 a day to deal with. The dealer I use for service confirmed that there is no reason to bring it in if I can do the rotation my self.

I did the standard rear-ward cross, torqued everything to 95ft-lbs and validate tire pressure.

I've noticed at highway speeds (55-60mph and above) there slight vibration in the steering wheel that wasn't there before.

I've re-check the tire pressure. All tires are 35psi and that was cold first thing in the morning with the trucking sitting overnight. I rechecked the lugs and everything clicked at 95ft-lbs. This was also done cold first thing in the morning.

I'm thinking one of my rear wheels my have been a touch out of balance.

I'm going to schedule a service call and was planning to ask for rebalancing of all the wheels and an alignment.

Yep the "normal" vibration. I had it on my FJ Cruiser as well until I bought some TRD wheels and new Toyo ATII's. After a competent tech working on the rig it was 1000% better.:closed_2:

They found a front wheel was out of balance and corrected it. When I went to pickup the vehicle they wanted to charge me $52 and change. OH HECK NO!!!! After I was done screaming in my head, I calmly asked why I was being charged when I only had 5k miles on the 4Runner. 25k .. maybe .. but 5k ... come on. The service writer never answered and just took the paperwork back. A few key strokes later and a new $0.00 invoice was printed.

The next day I did some highway driving and the vibration was still there. A lot better but clearly still there. It would appear the tech didn't test drive the 4Runner before completing the work.

Back to the dealer 7:30am tomorrow morning for take two.

just had TRD wheels/BFG KO2's 275's installed and noticed a vibration thru and visibly in the wheel at street 45mph speeds. sounds like what the OP is referring to ??

OP have you resolved this in any way?

Update

They test drove the car and confirmed the issue. They rebalanced all the wheels and went out for a test drive. The vibration was still there. They did the balance again but everything came back to spec.

At this point they took my tires to took the wheels to their sister Dodge dealership (across the street). Their machine said all 4 wheels were out of balance. They balanced per the Dodge machine. Reinstalled and then test drove the 4Runner. The vibration was gone. The Toyota dealership had a miss-calibtated balancer.

So far everything handles great and the issue is solved.

This ended up not being over ... by a long shot.

I was able to get the truck out on the open highway. Here in CO the posted speed limit outside a city limit is 75mph. Sadly at about 75-80mph the vibration returned .... grrrrr.

I called AutoNation back and scheduled a third appointment. I came in and explained the issue and when it was happening. 3 hours later the service writer came out and explained they road tested the 4Runner at highway speed, rechecked the balance and checked the suspension parts for correct torque. They said they found one rear tire was .5oz out of balance, but that was within Toyota spec and they wouldn't be rebalancing my tires. He then tried to explain the issue was cause by road surfaces or maybe was carrying something in the trunk ... WFT. I almost lost it. I asked why they wouldn't rebalance the tires if they found one out of spec. They explained that .5oz was within the shops spec and there was nothing they could do. At this point I was done with AutoNation.

I talked to my autobroker and they said they have been getting really good feedback about Groove Toyota.

I called and schedule an appointment with Groove. I went in and outlined all the issues over the past 1.5 months. They were pretty sure they could find the issue. After about 1 hour they came back and said they wanted to do a road force balance. There would be a cost, but worked with me on the price since I've been fitting the issue for so long. They did find issues with the balance and corrected it.

On the way home everything drove great. I finally have a smooth ride. What a PITA.

Needless to say I'm 100% done with AutoNation and will be doing all my service at Groove. I'll also be writing an email AutoNations GM outlining my experience and that I've taken my business elsewhere.

Glad to hear the issue is resolved, for now. My '15 SR5 also developed the wobble/vibration after the last service rotation. The dealer road force balanced the front tires and it was smooth as silk. That was 5K miles ago and the wobble has returned, albeit to a lesser degree. I'm waiting to see if another rotation fixes it. Hope yours lasts.

My understanding is most dealers or quality tire shops (Big-O or Discount) should be able to do a road force balance. You have to ask for it or the tech needs to think it has to be done. It takes longer than a normal balance and cost around $85. A normal balance runs about $45 here in Denver.

That was 5K miles ago and the wobble has returned, albeit to a lesser degree. I'm waiting to see if another rotation fixes it. Hope yours lasts.

I would be a little concerned if the vibration returned. That means something has changed (tire pressure, uneven wear, missing weight and so on) to cause the issue to return. Make sure to check your tire pressure too. Rotating the tires really isn't a fix. Its just moving the issue to a different location. If its a front tire and you move it the back, the vibration may 'go away'. The going away may just be because you've moved the issue to the rear and can't feel it. When the bad tire is rotated back the front the issue will return.

Just my 2cents but I would go back to where the road force balance was done and explain the issue is back.

Not that this is related to your issue, but do the TRD Wheels require 95 ft-lbs? That seems a bit high to me.

I test drove a few 4runners prior to the one I bought. Everyone had a vibration at highway speeds. They were all different dealers. The one I ended up buying had a slight vibration also.

I fixed the problem (in my head) by lifting and putting heavier tires on. Now when I get a shimmy I say "meh, bigger tires"

Seriously though, Road Force is the way to go.

Not that this is related to your issue, but do the TRD Wheels require 95 ft-lbs? That seems a bit high to me.

I have a Proto torque wrench with a twist dial. Its set to just under the 95 mark. I figure by the time it clicks I'm around 95lbs. In reality I'm somewhere between 90-95.

It should do a calibration on it but don't know how. Any info on that would helpful.
