QUESTIONAIRE: Problems you've had with 4th gens?

The odometer is rapidly approaching 36,000 for my 03, and I'm still contimplating whether to get the 100,000 factory bumper-to-bumper warranty deal for $825.

Therefore, I thought to ask what kinds of problems people have had with their 4th generations. Here's the questions I'd like to ask:

1. What problems did you have?
2. At what mileage did the problem(s) occur?
3. How much did it cost to resolve (or might have costed if not under warranty)?

50k strong and absolutely no problems!

40k coming soon, here is my list with fixes.

1) Driveline clunk (Fix grease the slip yoke)
2) Driver Seat squeak (Fix grease the seat rails)
3) Moonroof rattle and not closing properly (FIx some platic tubes and you guessed it grease it)
4) 6 CD Changer failed to swap discs ( Fix replace HU under warranty)
5) Rear hatch struts not extending all the way (Fix replace under warranty)
6) Vibration on steering wheel at 60-70 (Fix throw out Dunflops, got Revos)
7) SOme rattles and squeaks coming from the back (Not fixed yet, but greasing the hatch and rear seats will probably do the trick)
8) Crushed running boards (Fix get sliders)


SO the moral of the story is if you can't grease it replace it.

I have a very early 03 model (build Oct 02, bought Nov 02), but to be honest the overall interior integrity is not holding up as well as I hoped. I think it is better in later 03s and onward though. I will probably have to spend some time tracing down some interior rattles to fix up after 40k, but mechanically it is still very solid as it should be.

Air conditioning light kept blinking with no air around 60K, fixed with relay. If you know where it is, it would have been cheaper to replace it myself rather than pay the deductible for Toyo to do it.

HVAC control knobs going out (no lights and controls are being lost) around 65-70K, the cost is still up for debate. :bash: The service guy mentioned that it was just the knobs at $35 a piece. They are easy to replace.

Besides that, nothing @ > 75K

lug nut sheared off.

Lug nut sheared off when replacing wheel back on fixing a flat 3 weeks after purchase. Toy fixed it without question. Nothing more since then. 18,500 miles now.

Just came back from a long trip from Nothern Cal to San Diego and back via Hwy 395 over the High Sierras where the highway traveled between 6,000-8000 foot elevation. Went to several ghost towns and dirt tracks from graded roads to some short goat trails. All 4x4 systems were outstanding.

Ran several miles on washboard roads. My old Tahoe with leaf springs and solid rear axel would bounce nad shake my prostate to hell. The Toy4runner with coil springs nad 4 link suspension was smooth, in control, supple and no pogoing. Just a pleasure to drive.

Yea I would love to know the same thing.....

Oh.. On mine they had to (in the middle of now) replacing the whole moon roof assembly. They are also putting on a new catalytic convertor to get rid of the rotten egg smell. That is a TSB though.

sunroof rattle when closed-TSB installed felt

All perfect and functioning as engineered.

BTW...I have the 75K, 5 year bumper to bumper and paid like $650 from Toyota

At around 5,000 miles, my 12 volt outlet went on me and it was more serious than a fuse. They replaced some wiring and my fuse block. I can't fully blame Toyota becuase maybe I blew it when I plugged something in.

I had my sunroof go out on me at 8,000 miles. They replaced the sunroof assembly.

Other than that, every thing is fine. I don't consider these problems anything major because they didn't leave me stranded!

05 4Runner. Almost three months old with 2300 miles on it, and there were some small problems here and there.
1. Sunroof motor malfunction (Computer diagnosed and reset)
2. Steering vibration at high speed (4 tires balance/ rotation and front-end alignment. Fix)
3. Broken power window switch (scheduled this coing Friday-not fix yet)
4. Time will tell.
5. .......
6. ........
7. .........
8. .......... AND SO ON.......9....10....WHO KNOW?

There is a recent thread in the Problems section I believe. This thread gives the name of the Toyota dealer who is offering it and it seems to have been verified.

Yes, I started the thread & talked to the person at the Toyota dealership in PA. He is the GM & is a member of this forum (often lurking - maybe even reading this!). Looks to be completely legit.

Be sure to go further down in that thread, because it starts out with one dealer & then mentions another with a better price. (I have talked with both.)

Ours is also an early-build '03. It currently has 42,xxx miles, including probably 7,500 arduous tow miles. Problems:

-Squeaky seats, fixed with lube on seat rails

-Sulfur odor on hard acceleration, vastly improved by TSB procedure, including cat replacement.

Nothing else worthy of mention has happened. The truck is still as quiet and solid as when it was new.

STUPID A/C light blinking (=no A/C) every now and then. Zig, do you know where this "relay" is located? and how much do you think it'll cost me cuz i am also at about 65k miles.

So far I don't see anything that would make me say, "I think I definately need the xtra warranty because of ___________ or _________." Seems like everything is fairly isolated, or perhaps things Toyota has fixed already. (Hmmmm, OK Mr. Intuition, what's the right answer? To spend $825 on the warranty or no?!)

I have 20,XXX so far and she has not been to the doctor yet!The only problem I have is a rattling noise when the sunroof shade is open but its not a big deal.

I have 39k on mine and the only problem was for a broken button on the driver side.

For only $825, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

4016 miles: Fixed moonroof rattle, replace stuck moonroof switch and replace a defective roof rack mount (one of the adjusting screws wouldn't go in). Total cost covered by warranty: $528.03.

That's it. I'm now at 38,000 miles and other than some occasional minor rattles from the rear seat not latching right, it's perfect.

Not giving it "a second thought" as in getting the warranty or not worrying about it?
