Questions About Rear Hatch & Window

When we bought our '04 this June, it only came with 2 keys, no remotes/fobs. First, what would you recommend as far as what we should go with when we invest in new remotes? We want to be sure they have the button to roll the rear window up/down.

So, the keyhole on the back hatch, as far as I know, doesn't fully function properly. Using the key, you can lock all the doors and roll the back window -up-. Otherwise, they keyhole is useless. It doesn't unlock the back hatch or any other doors, nor does it roll the back window -down-. Is it supposed to? If so, does anyone have any suggestions for how we might fix this, or would we be best off taking it to a dealership?

Buy the OEM remotes off Ebay they usually run around $25 a piece. You can program them yourself, search the threads on this forum for instructions.

I have an 08 and turning the key to the drivers side un-locks the doors and rolls the window down. Turning the key to the passenger side locks the doors and rolls the window up. Now unless it's different on a 04, which I don't believe it is, then yes it sounds like you have a problem with the hatch. If you have a warranty on it then I would just take it to the dealer.

The key should unlock the doors and roll the rear gate window up and down. There is a delay when you roll the window up and down. You have to hold the key in the lock/unlock position for a few seconds. I assume you've done this and would guess from the description that the switch contacts are just dirty and need to be cleaned.

Also make sure you get the remote fobs that have the 3rd button on the face to roll down the rear window; if you are interested in having that feature. There are nearly identical Toyota ones that will work - including some advertised on eBay as 4Runner remotes - that do not have the rear window roll down feature.

For my '04 the remote is the 4 button (lock, unlock, window, panic) HYQ12BAN series.

Well, we just went out and "inspected" the keyhole in the back. It's not working at all whatsoever now. The door will lock/unlock and the window will roll up/down when the buttons in the front are used so I'm thinking something is wrong with the keyhole itself. How would we go about taking it apart and seeing if cleaning things up a bit does any good? It looks like the screws would only open up the license plate light covers and something to do with the opening mechanism.

Just pop off the interior panel and then peel back the plastic you'll see behind it. The lock should be exposed. If you have, you can remove the license plate garnish which is 4 screws and a couple of clips. I just replaced my garnish but can't remember how the lock was attached. All in all, fairly easy regardless.

Thank you, Asmara and DRC, for all the good info. I've bookmarked the diagrams for taking things apart, but SURPRISE! a little WD-40 did the trick. The keyhole is working properly now. Still a little snag/pop/stick when you go to turn the key to the left to unlock/roll down, but we were happy-happy campers when we realized the WD-40 had worked after it sat in the keyhole when we drove to the beach this afternoon. I almost did a little dance, haha. We might still take the back panel apart to get all the Uwharrie dirt out of the plastic cover. It's pretty gross and probably isn't doing things any good to be floating around in there.

Key Remote

Note that the remote only allows for the window to be lowed not raised. I wish it did both.
