Questions on new rear end

My rear end on my 4runner is goin out and doesn't have much life left in it. It'd be cheaper for me to just to get one off of a part out or from a junkyard that's still good. Can anybody tell me what year models I can use the rear end from? I have a 98 3.4 4x4

Does it have an e-locker? My 98 limited with the e-locker is 4.30 and my 02 limited is 4.10 ratios, I'm not 100% sure of the year variations in the ratios though because I've had a 98 SR5 which I think was also 4.10s

If you have a factory e-locker then only a rear end with a e-locker will fit, if you dont then all the rear ends wheather its off of a v6 or 4cyl will fit. Only difference ive heard is the gear ratios, youll have to get the vin off your diff to find out what gear ratio you have and match it up, or you can just open your diff and devide the number of teeth on your pinion by the number of teeth on your ring gear and match them that way. Most common gear ratio is 4:10

If you pull your third member, you actually need to divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. This is usually 43/10 (4.30 ratio) or 41/10 (4.10 ratio).

A much easier way to do it is to jack the rear end so that one tire is off the ground, then spin the free wheel 20 times while counting the revolutions of the drive shaft. Divide the drive shaft rotations by 10 and that's your ratio. This saves you from pulling the 3rd member.

This. Saves time spinning the tire for sure

Mine is a 98 sr5 with no e-locker. Can I use any year rearend between 96-02?? I think I have 4.10's but not for sure

Jordan, you probably have a 4.10 diff. Any other 8" 4.10 open diff will work, even from '80s trucks. If you know you're going to be replacing it, don't bother with the spin and count - yank your diff and count the teeth, then you can go shopping. Don't buy from a junkyard unless you have to, because they'll overcharge. Check your local classifieds and the WTS ads on your local fourwheeling boards, you should find a 4.10 third for less than $150. Get a V6 third if you can, but if all you can find is a 4cyl third that'll work too.

I found a 98 limited today for part out. I don't know whether mine has the 4:10 or the 4:30 and the same prob with the other one I found. Could I just get the rearend and the front chunk out of the part out and it would work fine?

Take a pic of your driver's side door jamb sticker. There's a code on it that will tell which gears you have in your current truck.

Here is the guide ive gone by on 3 separate occasions. All 3 times its proven correct. I went to buy a replacement axle a couple hours away from me got there checked the code and I had "a03" on mine and the runner I was pulling it from. Both 4.10 ratio.

And yes. Swapping both front a rear diff from that truck into yours will be fine.

Same as mine. I have the a03. I didn't have this chart today when I looked at the other one although I wish I did. Another question. I have 33x12.50 15's. The chart suggests 5.29 gears. Do you think that would be a good thing to do? Or do you think the 4.10's are fine?

Can't help ya there. I don't know much that. There are many others that can help though

You could do that, but it'd be a lot less work to just make sure you've got the right gearing in your new third.

That particular chart is assuming that you have the 112hp 22RE and a five speed manual. With any other drivetrain combo you kinda have to extrapolate - you've got near twice the horsepower with your 5VZE, so with 33s 5.29 gears would be overkill for you. I think the common wisdom is 4.56 for 33s with a five speed, 4.88 with an automatic. But if you've been driving on 33s with 4.10 and have no gripes, then I wouldn't sweat it.

Where could I find a set of 4.88 gears? And what would they come off of?

You can get a 4.88 rear if you're lucky enough to find a second gen with the v6, automatic, and tow package. They're rare, and you'd have to regear your front separate because the front diff doesn't match yours.

Or just buy a front and rear diff already set up with 4.88s from ECGS, or find a local driveline shop, or whatever. Lots of options.

How pricey is that?
