Thanks to everyone who posted replies regarding my plans to trade in the Jeep and buy a 4runner. One more question regarding the 4 wheel drive systems. Is the 4 wd system full-time, or does it have to be disengaged on dry pavement? From what I have read, the 4wd systems are different on the 4.0 and 4.7 engines. What is the difference? Is one preferable over the other when it comes to trail riding and serious 4 wheeling? Thanks again for the input!

I think 4x4 version which comes with 4.0 is better for trail riding. I hate the fact that I cannot turn off traction control on my 4WD but it drives superb on pavement and its much safer

The V8's are full time AWD. There is a rotary switch to engage 4-Lo. Both modes will operate with the center diff open until to you engage the lock button that's on the dash to the left of the steering wheel.
The V6's have a multimode setup. 2WD, 4Hi, 4Lo. The 4Hi and 4Lo position can be run on pavement just as any other full-time or AWD vehicle can be. The diff is open until you press the center diff lock button.
Both systems are identical in how they operate with the V8 just not giving you the option to operate in 2WD.
