When you introduce new fluid into a system it dissolves build up and deposits, among a myriad of other benefits.
The idea behind the drain and refill "method" is that by only replacing small amounts of fluid you slowly dissolve built up material in the system. Should you replace all of the fluid at one time, you stand a greater chance of dislodging larger pieces of build up that could be harmful to the system; or so the theory goes...
(Sidenote: not trying to argue a point, just want to give a perspective that would help you evaluate a plan of action best for you.)
