quick A/T fluid change question

When you introduce new fluid into a system it dissolves build up and deposits, among a myriad of other benefits.

The idea behind the drain and refill "method" is that by only replacing small amounts of fluid you slowly dissolve built up material in the system. Should you replace all of the fluid at one time, you stand a greater chance of dislodging larger pieces of build up that could be harmful to the system; or so the theory goes...

(Sidenote: not trying to argue a point, just want to give a perspective that would help you evaluate a plan of action best for you.)

I'm looking to do the basic drain and fill today, not a full flush.

How much fluid am I typically looking at to replace when you just drain and fill again? Thinking about getting two containers that are the same so it's easy to tell how much fluid to replace. Will a gallon container be big enough or should I be looking for something larger?

Do you guys just fill it up from the dipstick tube or is there another way? I don't have access to my owners manual at the moment... not sure if it'd be in there anyway.

Thanks!

Get a gallon bottle. I did a drain and fill last week. I took it for a drive before and drove through all the gears. Drained it out and the manual was correct, only 2 quarts came out. I'd imagine that if you let it sit longer then more fluid would collect in the pan. I used Castrol Domestic Dex/Merc for what it's worth.

Regarding how to fill it, yes, the only way is through the dipstick hole. It's the easiest anyway. Hit up Vatozone and find this orange funnel made by Blitz if you don't already have a long enough funnel. That funnel is just the right length to reach the fill hole.
