Quick help! We are stuck!

I was following along the drama on my phone last night. Going to throw an assortment of bolts in my tool bag now.

There shouldn't be any gap for that lower shock mount as it should come with spacers to prevent lateral movement. Might be what caused it to back out..... or you forgot to tighten it.

There is space on the new bolt as well :wow2: Just about big enough to stick the end of a flat head screwdriver into. Exact same gap on each side.

I'd go ahead and replace that shock too, they get beat up like that and can get a weak spot. Remember high pressure and weak spot could yield another misshap, and due to your use it would be pretty cheap insurance.

Ya ,there should be spacers/bushings to take up that gap so the shock can't move back and forth.

The bushing on the OME's is there, but the gap is still there on both. What should I do about it?

As for replacing the shock, I thought of that. On the 150 mile drive home it seemed to be fine. 20+ miles of that was getting out of the forest with plenty of flexing. I would hate to blow the money on another shock, but I would also hate to blow the shock on another trip :whipping2

You should have had put a spacer before the shock eye and the one after the shock eye and then the bolt. Without them the shock will move for and aft when unloaded and loosen the bolt.
Here is a pic of the spacer with the bolt removed . The other one is on the other side of the shock like the second pic shows.

Thanks man! I do not see how two spacers that large could possibly fit in there on my shocks though. The open space is mine is only about as large as the end of a large flathead screwdriver.

When I was over at TacomawWorld they had something similar. There was a thread where you could sign up to be part of the "TacomaWorld support network" (or something like that) then if another member was traveling etc and they ran into any problems they could look through the list of peeps signed up to find the nearest forum member and see if they could help out. Nothing worse than being in unfamiliar territory and breaking down, always nice to have someone familiar with the area to help you out.

I think that is a great idea, I'd gladly help another member in trouble in my area. I vote for a new thread named T4R.ORG.supportteam, or something like that. Who's the moderator? Or how about putting a poll to see if anyone else is interested.
I mean if I saw another 4R stranded on the side of the road I'd help anyway, but if I was stuck in AZ or UT it would be handy to know someone around who could help me.

Ya, My Icons are a different design then your OME's . But the basic principal is the same in that there should be no for/aft play on the bottom shock mount.If there is a space there the constant going back and forth hitting the bolt could cause it to become loose.

The important part is ...What do you attribute the reason for the bolt coming loose and falling off to be and to prevent it happening again in the future? You actually got lucky that it didn't fall off and the shock come loose going around a curve on a backroad or highway. The load could have shifted abruptly causing you to lose control.

I believe that it rattled loose due to me running 40mph or so down a washboard NFS road for about 20 miles. I could be wrong, but thats all I can think of. Should I back both of them out and add washers and some loctite?
 
Wish I would have seen this earlier. I was up in Superior for a night run Sat with a group with a ton of tools and a few great mechanics. Glad to hear it all worked out. Serious points for Hatch Toyota.
