From wikipedia: "A 2.7-liter I4 was available on 2WD models, but was discontinued after the 2010 model year."
That's the engine, not sure about the 2x4 end of prod.

You can still get 4x2. I don't think they ever discontinued it (only to bring it back in 2014).

When I purchased by '13 T4R they tried to put me in a 4x2.....I quickly told them no thanks. So they are still around...
Never stopped. You can buy a 2x4 2014.

No you could not get 4x2 up here. Our small market we get stuck with. It being able to choose any options. When I bought my 2012 LE you had a choice of, SR5, SR5 premium, Trail, and Limited. With all models you get running boards, the trail at the time you got kdss, and the limited you got jbl with 3rd row seats. Haven't looked on their website in while so I'm not sure if it's still the same.
Not that I would buy one but it is fun to play on the the ford and ram websites. You can choose and remove pretty much everything, but at the same time makes it confusing as you can make a Ram sport almost the same as a Laramie, when looking at used you really have to know what your looking for/at.
Up here a Limited is a Limited. You can't go "ohhh its a limited but doesn't have xxxx"

Did they ever SELL the 4 banger?
Toyota has a habit of offering bizarre base models and lie about their "availability" so they can put up a "Starts at $24999!" tag on their web site, but when you get to the dealership you get told that they are only "allocated" v6 models that start at 35,000.
I would like to actually SEE one of these 4 banger 4Runners. I bet they don't exist.

I remember reading that 4 cylinder model was only available in a very limited capacity -- select southern states like CA and FL. 6 cylinder made up > 90% of sales in 2010. So there are some 4 cylinders out there. Probably some out there, but they're probably as rare as unicorns.
