Quick Question

Can someone point me in the right direction of the mod that will disable the (what I think is the VSC) where when the computer detects wheel slippage it kills the gas? Accompanied with a repetitive clicking sounds in the firewall.

I find this "safety feature" annoying.

but I digress. I believe you can do it. Do you have a 4x4 model? When you lock the center diff, which essentially turns it into a traditional 4x4 the traction control is turned off.

I do think there is a mod to allow you to trick the computer into thinking the diff is locked, even when not.

Search around on this forum, or someone will link it, if they find it.

There was a time in the snow when I was trying to make a left turn; problem was while I was trying to make the turn there was too much ice underneath me causing me to slide forward, I was forced to turn but there was oncoming traffic...so naturally I tried to gun it to cross the road before getting T-boned- BUT this safety feature killed the gas! It was a VERY near miss :wow2:

If you are in snow, just lock the center diff. Snow, Mudd, water, sand are all slip surfaces that would qualify as an appropriate time to lock the diff.

You don't want the diff locked when you are on NON slip surfaces, as that ends up winding up the components and can damage the 4x4 drive. Normal road driving in regular rain. But if it is BAD.. wet or slick. Lock that diff and enjoy traditional 4x4 control.


AWD is awesome for 80% of the time. This is how the 4runner acts with the diff unlocked... but in snow or mud, when you need power to all wheels regardless of spin... lock it up. This is why I don't feel the need for a extra button to cut the traction control off.

To each their own. Everyone has different styles and abilities.

He may have a newer runner. I have a 2005, so I can't speak from experience. But I do believe later 4th gens got the additional button/option to turn it off.

it's the button to the left of the steering wheel, down by the fuse box. I don't have a picture to share but it looks like a chassis with an "X" in the middle.

Ok. We are all talking about the same thing. The X button is the CENTER DIFF lock and it only operates when in a 4x4 mode, if you have a multi mode.

If you have a V8 4x4, like me, which is always in 4x4. It can be turned on whenever.

I thought the person was looking for a button to disable vsac without needing 4x4 on. That is a different thing, than engaging the center diff.

There is an electrical plug on the brake master cylinder...if you just unplug it it unplugs the abs which essentially turns off the traction control...your dash lights will come on but they turn off when you plug it back in....some people have used the plug to make a switch out of it by splicing the wires...just my .02

Just dis about five minutes of research on the topic and heard of an interesting method of fooling the vehicle into disabling the trac control. It sounds like a joke and I haven't tried it yet, but it's worth a try. A toyota service tech said that on some tr4 models you can push the E-brake in one click just so the light comes on, but not to actually engage the brake. This could be total BS, but hey if it works, that would be pretty sweet! I may give it a shot later today.
