R.I.P Paul Walker

I can't sleep and I am bored. I thought I'd look at the accident scene on google maps. It seems that whenever there is an accident involving these cars it's usually on a straight away. The street they are on is wide and coming out of a sweeping right hand turn. The only thing I can speculate about how the driver lost control of the car is that he was trying to drift through turn and lost control or he down shifted at high RPM. The screen grab of the skid marks looks like the car just jerked hard to the left.....like I said...I can't sleep and am bored so......here are some pics. I just hope it was instant and no pain was felt. See what you think.

Crash scene. Not sure if the car was spinning and then went sideways into the light pole or snapped hard to the left and then sideways into the light pole.

Uh yeah at a minimum. Absolutely, especially with death as the alternative.
Of course but, like I said satirically, all you can really ask is pretty please... Unless you want to further endanger yourself, other motorists, and pedestrians and try and knock the driver out, attempt to shift gears, or some other dangerous option to slow/stop the car.

Anyway, here is another link with likely the same video footage if the FB link above doesn't work:

A couple local friends who were at the event said the car was only traveling around 45mph before losing control.

Really hard to believe 45 mph would do that kind of damage. I've been to more wrecks than I can count and the very few fatals at that speed usually involved pedestrians or elderly drivers.

the driver was not excessively speeding, if at all

So because someone somewhere said they weren't speeding it must be true, right? You're stating it like you were there to see what happened. How is that any more ridiculous than my thinking they were speeding? Witnesses lie all the time.

How do you or anyone know what actually happened?

The car could have blown a tire or suffered an LBJ failure (a stretch I know but hey).

The point is just because someone looses control doesn't mean they were breaking the law.

You're right, a number of mechanical failures could be responsible but again, the damage to the vehicle is consistent with a higher speed than the 45 mph a witness claimed. Regardless of what caused the wreck, speed contributed to how much damage there was. I would imagine Porsche designed that car to help the occupants survive a harder hit than 45 mph. If not and that's the result of an impact at that speed, why would anyone ever drive that car again?

And anyone who thinks you have to be going ridiculously fast to lose control of a high powered sports car has never driven one. One small mistake and your not in a good spot

Correct but that small mistake at 45 has fewer consequences than that same mistake at 145. Which is why speed limits exist.

Is it possible I'm wrong? Sure. Looking at this picture though, I don't see how anyone can claim 45 mph did this. I'm sure there are plenty of people on this site that have been involved in a car wreck and are somewhat familiar with the damage "normal" speeds can do. I just don't see how that kind of damage would be possible at the speed someone suggested. The aftermath of the M3 wreck that was posted showed it survived going off a cliff at 60-70 better than this Porsche did and that guy walked away.

Circumstances surrounding any accidents are never the same so you can't say by looking at a pic and claim that 45mph couldn't do that kind of damage. Unless you are on the scene with proper training it's all speculation.

We've all sped here and there but you sure would think some holier than thou posters have never seen the + side of 60mph....ever. Stop being so judgmental since every time a car accident is the basis of a thread we get all these type of assumptions and just turn into people being jerks so let's move on since most of us are adults here and don't need to be told the obvious.

I was in an accident a few years back in my Dodge 1500. A lady cut me off in a truck, and I hit the corner of her bed and tailgate, creating a wedge. I was going 20mph when I hit her. It looked like I hit her going 60, as the damage went all the way to the engine black. So yes, I can believe that going 45mph and hitting a thin object like a tree can cause that damage. Let alone the damage the resulting fire caused. Someone with knowledge of this car stated that the rear housing the engine and tranny are made to separate in a crash, which by the pic you posted, happened. I absolutely believe that hitting that tree sideways at 45 can cause the car to end up the way it did.

My main point was that there were a few people, you included, who were and still are making ridiculous assumptions when no one has all the details. Multiple people are throwing "facts" out when the story is still developing. I never said they weren't speeding, I'm just going by the info we've gotten so far. We've had statements tat they weren't speeding, yet I've yet to see a statement from eye witnesses saying they were. I'm not going around condemning the individuals for reckless driving and endangering lives when I only know part of the story.
More than a couple people have said they have no sympathy for these two, believing they were being stupid. That is the epitome of self righteous BS that happens too often with major stories like this. Have some damn respect for those involved, and pull your head out of your ass.

It will be interesting to see what speed the investigators estimate they were going. I just street viewedthe road and when you come out of that bend the street ends/you have to make a 90 degree right turn... and it looks like it would be coming up fast. Hard to tell but I can't imagine they would have been accelerating out if that bend. Maybe those white bump things that you guys in the southern states have on the roads cause them to spin out? Maybe they hit the brakes coming out of the corner and those bumpy lane dividers spun them out? Maybe they blew a tire? It looks lik you could take that bend in the road pretty quick but, again, you've got a 90 degree right turn right after you come out of it.

It's also a business/industrial park, not a residential thoroughfare.

Also, the vehicle exploded and was on fire a very long time. That would have contributed to the damage. The video showing car on fire looks pretty intact, then you hear some small explosions.

If those pictures were posted by a newspaper or other source saying random idiot driving $440,000 car involved in 95 mph wreck in 35 mph business zone, no one here would question it. While some may say "rip" or some other nonsense, there wouldn't be this outpouring of support. But because some people here thought he was cute or they loved his lame movies, they feel compelled to defend him while not knowing what happened.

You like to point out my assumptions but then fail to show that I said I have no sympathy. While it's tragic to see a young father killed, unfortunately there are consequences for our actions. Good and bad.

I'll add this. A quick google showed no other FATAL wrecks in that stretch of road. Not 100% accurate I'm sure but I'd guess it's correct. Somehow, plenty of other people have managed to navigate that stretch of road without fatal incident until a "race car" designed to handle corners and accelerate better than your average vehicle loses control and kills 2 people. It just doesn't make sense. You have a better car with more abilities and two people are dead. I'd say there's a good chance the driver was going too fast.

Take a look at the yellow sign just in front of the car. It's not a speed limit sign, it's a suggestion. Even if 45 is somehow correct, that's triple the recommended speed for that area. A quote from a friend about the driver:

"Torp says he's in shock after the accident partly because Rodas and Walker were "very experienced and professional race car drivers."

"It was clear the car had hit two trees then finally hit a street lamppost," he says. "Parts of the car were strewn everywhere on the street, as far as 150 feet. I didn't see any skid marks. Where the car had crashed was on a long straightaway. How fast they were going, I don't know." "

So you have an extremely capable car and a "professional race car driver" and I'm sure people will still say it's ridiculous to assume speed was a factor.

After playing with google, the reported address is incorrect. JayceeP was correct about the location. 34° 27' 11.90", -118° 34' 45.2 into maps.google and see for yourself.

People aren't defending him, people are just pointing out hte fact that posters like you are defaming him "while not knowing what happened." It would be the same if it was anyone else. The only reason this was posted is because people, like you for example, clearly know who he is.

That sign occurs after the accident scene. Are you implying you follow hose signs to a T? Most drivers on Thad don't. As you said, a guideline. 15mph? A car will idle itself and go faster than that.

Anyway, the point here is save the judgement for yourself. Let the experts make conclusions and release more facts before you make your own. It's obvious something went wrong and obviously they weren't going slow. It's also obvious that poor decisions may have been made. It's also obvious you aren't the remorseful type nor care for the lives of others. I'm sure if it was your brother, uncle, father or son, you'd be tooting your horn a little differently.

Some of you guys are acting like Trayvon Martin was driving this car. Wish you guys screaming speed and alcohol as absolute demons in the details would have waited for more of the story to come out before making such claims. I'm not saying you guys are wrong, I'm suggesting some of you are arm-chairing this situation without real details and we all know how dangerous that gets.

The 35 speed limit sign was before the wreck. The 15 suggestion sign was for the upcoming turn they should have been slowing for which they could see.

As a matter of fact, I do investigate wrecks for a living. Thanks for assuming I don't know what I'm talking about.

You're wrong about the part in bold but you're correct about my lack or remorse as I didn't do anything wrong.

HAHAHAH. My point proven.
Some of you guys are acting like Trayvon Martin was driving this car.

So it'd be ok if it was trayvon but since it was paul walker it's a tragedy?

I'm not saying you guys are wrong, I'm suggesting some of you are arm-chairing this situation without real details and we all know how dangerous that gets.

I see 0 danger in thinking driver was speeding. Thank you for at least saying you don't think we're wrong.

But a Sheriff’s official did confirm speed played a role in the deadly one-car accident.

“We don’t know much about the cause of the collision other than that we know speed was at least a contributing factor,” said Sgt. Brian Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

To be clear, I'm not saying speed was the cause of the wreck, I am saying excessive speed is what led to the enhanced mechanism that resulted in a fatality instead of less severe injuries.

Maybe if you showed the same compassion that you did for Boomer the dog, people would stop arguing with you.

RIP Boomer

And maybe you should consider why you're so emotionally invested in arguing with people you don't know, about two dead guys you don't know.

Where did I assume that? What you do for a living is totally irrelevant to anything I said- which is that you didn't have the facts.

You're just out here trying to validate you do indeed know what you're talking about by making assumptions with very few facts when the issue is someone is dead and you don't care. Good for you.

When my 10-year old responds like this, my wife or I will send him to his room for a cooling off period because we know that a sudden lack of focus on reality is usually the beginning of a pre-pubescent melt down.

I suspect you'd do well with a brief hiatus from this thread.

That situation is totally different from this one, I have a dog and know how hard it can be. That individual shared his grief and it's normal to show some sympathy/empathy. My argument here is based solely on whether or not the driver of that vehicle committed a grievous error in judgement. I've already stated it's sad to see a young father and another man die for no reason. That's not what I'm arguing.

Why? Being compassionate would somehow substantiate my argument or relieve the attacks on my opinion? This isn't anything emotional for me. I don't appreciate people jumping me for stating my opinion based on the few facts that are at hand and my view of the situation based on my training and experience.
