Depends on your budget. I use Yakima 66" cross bars and 6ft 2X4's U bolted to them to haul a 4X8 sheet of plywood. It's not an everyday thing though. If your talking just boards and ladders the crossbars are very strong and would be the everyday solution. If you watch Craigslist you can find the pieces you need pretty cheap.
