It's MORE expensive where I live. $16.99 for Zerex at O'reilly vs. $15.82 for SLL at the Toyota dealer. Both pre-mixed.

Thanks for the tip. It's $25 at my local dealer but they mentioned the concentrate is $30, a product I did not know existed. Found it on Amazon for $26 shipped and no tax for my state. That's a better deal than the Zerex as it was $32 for 2X 50/50 mix jugs. Distilled water is very cheap to dilute.

Edit: this is typically for the older Toyota's such as pre-2004. It can be used in newer engines but you would need to do a full flush and dilute the red with distilled water. The red requires shorter drain intervals such as 2 years/30k miles.

That is correct. They are 2 different coolants. I was going to say something myself but the OP didn't seem to like my other comments. [emoji23]

It's listed as compatible with the pink and I am going to completely drain and flush the cooling system before I re-fill with red and distilled water. The main difference is the longevity but as little as we drive the year time frame to replace will come into play before the miles anyway. Supposedly after the factory fill even the super long life coolant is only good for 50k miles, the red is 30k miles. Not a huge difference.

I thought the pink was simply diluted red but that is incorrect. Slightly different chemical composition to give the pink longer life.

Our original discussion was simply based on me being cheap, not improper coolant. The Zerex I listed is used by many people without issue. Your argument was similar to saying one should use the Toyota brand oil instead of Mobil 1.

Nope I wasn't even talking about the Zerex coolant at that point. I was referring to the red and pink coolant being the same, only being diluted. I was agreeing with 1000MPH that the coolants are different. Looks like you figured it out though.

Up to the full line on the side. Usually about a quart but can vary.

To expand on that, it is 10yr/100k for the FIRST coolant service. After that it is 5yr/50k, there should be an asterisk or a note that explains that.

This is only if you are using SLLC (Super Long Life Coolant) or an equivalent (just because it says "Universal" does not mean it is compatible, you need to match it up with the SLLC chemical make-up; I tend to have to explain it a lot on the 4th gen so if you have questions I can answer them.

So, at 100,000 miles do you recommend just opening the petcock valve to drain and refill the radiator? About 1 gallon.
Or also remove hoses etc to drain the whole system?
Should you also flush with water?
Remove and replace thermostat also?

BlackWorksInc hasn’t posted in awhile so I’ll give my opinion.
Never flush with water, if your system looks bad, Toyota recommends a second drain and fill.
Instructions are on the coolant container. Pic posted on the thread below.
My coolant looked so good at 104k miles, I didn’t bother with the extra work of opening the block drains.
My next drain and fill was at 120k miles 2 years later which was total useless overkill.
I’ve decided on a 36-48k, 3-4 year drain interval and I’m only doing the radiator drain and fill, about 1.1 gallon. YMMV.
Get your coolant at a participating dealer near you that offers a decent discount. Most don’t ship coolant but you can order online for pickup oftentimes cheaper than going in and buying.

Edit: just looking at local dealer prices for coolant. Some dealers are selling at MSRP $26.19. Others are offering up to 32% off. $18/gal is almost reasonable.

Apologies if this a thread high-jack, but I just changed the coolant in my 2018 Pro according to the directions here:
DIY maintenance quick reference

And when I went to the local auto parts store they didn't have the OEM coolant, so I found my way to a dealer that said they did.

I drove over, asked for OEM coolant and gave him my info. He then trudged off and brought me back a gallon of Pentosin Pentofrost A4 HOAT Phosphated Asian 50/50 Prediluted Antifreeze. I asked if this was the OEM coolant and he said "yup, that's what we use for your vehicle".

It certainly looked like what came out of my radiator, but...now I'm wondering if I screwed up.

Maybe they were out of the Toyota branded coolant. You didn't screw up, it's compatible, just not OEM fluid.

Has anyone used Zerex Asian pink coolant without and problems arising? It seems to be a good percentage cheaper than the TLLC and available locally at O'Reilly. I will do a proper water flush before re-filling.

Yes on Zerex and Yes on Peak pink coolant. 346K miles on a 2014.

Is it really that much cheaper to justify? Even is it's half the price of the Toyota SLLC, what's the cost savings divided out over say 5 years? Just buy the Toyota stuff and you know your golden.

The manufacturers play on just this sort of fear. Get yourself informed, read the ingredients and you will be free to choose.
