Radiator Replacement OEM vs Denso (or are they the same?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to replace the radiator in my 2001 3.4L SR5 alongside the timing belt job. Looking online it appears the OEM radiator (I believe part 16410-AZ011) is much cheaper ($40-50) than when I search the Denso (221-0508), which others on here mention using.

Is the Denso better? Or are they the same part? Any steer is appreciated, I'm happy to pay more if the Denso isn't worth the extra money. I was thrown for a loop with anything OEM actually being cheaper for once...

Watch were your getting Denso parts from. There is a pile of counterfeit parts on Amazon and eBay.

That OEM part number is made for Toyota by Denso so it's identical. Some online parts vendors will add additional shipping for radiators due to size so try pricing it from your local Toyota dealer if you can. Make sure to inspect any radiator you get for damage. A few minorly bent fins is to be expected.
 
You at least know Genuine Parts are the same spec as what came on your rig. I mostly use OEM or OEM mfg parts. As that I have best luck with over 30 years of working on Toyota's.

I believe Toyota Denso radiator is made in Taiwan and Denso radiator are also made in China. Do a search on this forum for additional information.

Radiators aren't that complicated and the process of manufacturing them is generic. I took a chance on eBay. Both the radiator and condenser were exact matches. The radiator even comes with the side mounting pieces included. Those cost a lot extra if not included. Keep the old stuff off your old radiator that disconnects. The cap and the cooler line connections weren't included. I saved quite a bit and it's all the the same..

I went OEM from the dealer, and in case anyone was curious it was indeed Denso, and made in Taiwan. $127, which blows my mind for an OEM radiator bought at a dealership...

Fair price for Taiwan-made. I should grab a backup.

Some parts get different replacement part numbers Toyota has been known to do.

The originals were made in Japan and I am sure are being mfg elsewhere now. Doesn't surprise me the dealer denso are mfg is Thailand.

You can probably get the same radiator from rock auto. :) It possibly delivered to your door for less than thr dealer price.

I am surprised the dealer cost was that low.

Toyota is losing its butt to the aftermarket on cooling products.

A radiator used to be over 400 dollars for a 3rd gen 4runner. I bought a TYC for like 87 dollars off 1-800-Radiator in 2014.

Toyota has released a line of parts called "MVP" - Its mostly radiators, condensors, and some other parts that are commonly replaced with aftermarket in collision claims.

YOu can still order the 400 dollar, Made in Japan, radiator I think.
 
Just a heads up to all, the AZ in the part number means it's Toyota's economy line part (to compete with the aftermarket). When I replaced mine from the dealer recently, it didn't seem to have quite the same quality as the original, although it was pretty close. A couple other part codes:

-items ending in -84 mean remanufactured
-repair kits start with 0400

Another option is the Aluminum Koyorad radiator. It's a direct fit. No modifications needed.

3rd gen 4runner radiator replace(Parts Geek bait and switch)

Parts Geek is a scam Bait and Switch company. In Nov. 2023 I ordered radiator W0133-1895498 for $190.00 plus tax, insurance, shipping ...3x they pulled the bait and switch scam sending me the $143.00 cheap radiator 221-0508.
3CS reps and 2 supervisors refused to help me get what I ordered....or in case of radiator #3 if I keep it, refund the difference in price of the CHEAP RADIATOR versus what I paid for the expensive actual OEM radiator. PG repeatedly said send it back at your expense and reorder from Web site......same scam Bait and Switch 3x. PG stated if you keep it, you are billed for the higher priced radiator you ordered even though PG substituted the CHEAPER radiator. It is your problem, not PG!

If you paid with a CC, dispute it, keep the part, and move on with your life. I always pay with a CC, not a Debit card, for this exact reason. I have only had to do 1 chargeback but it was painless. I ordered a power steering pump, it said "shipped" but waiting on carrier to pickup. I took too long to "dispute" it as lost (30 days past original shipping tag creation date), so UPS said TOO BAD, as their system said they never picked it up. Seller said TOO BAD, outside 30 days from purchase...

I just forwarded all emails with my dispute that I called in, and it was handled in 24 hours after the acknowledged receipt of my documents.
