Radio Antenna Replacement

replacing the power antenna on a '98 should be relatively simple and cheep, as long as the motor still works. toyota will quote you $300 plus if you ask them for the antenna. if you tell them you don't need the motor, it should be around $30.00. installation is incredibly easy and just takes seconds. don't know if that is the problem, just thought that i would throw that out there.

It is a power antenna and I believe the motor still works fine, I can hear it running when I start the vehicle and when I shut it off, lol took me awhile to figure out what the sound was. No idea about a white cable. Previous owner told me someone broke the antenna off and I haven't taken the time to really even look at it yet. It's got a couple other minor mechanical problems I''ve been trying to get fixed first (broken motor mount and an intermittent tranny problem that I think we traced to a shredded vacuum line).

remove the chrome top part of the antenna housing on top the truck.
you can get to your antenna motor through the passenger side fender well remove the black plastic fender well enough to get to the motor remove it and there are a couple screws to open the motor up to get the broken line that is inside. remove it and put everything back together.
I lubed my new antenna gear strip with a little silicone and you need someone to turn the radio on so the antenna motor runs.
When it stops as the person turns the radio off feed the gear strip(antenna) into the antenna hole you will feel the motor grab it and pull it down.( if memory serves me correct the gear teeth face the front of the truck).
Your done this is a very easy fix.

the dread power mast issue. i hated the toyota motorized ones since when up and driving on the highway the mast would eventually get a bend in it and put undue stress on the motor and cause premature motor failure. i learned this the hard way on my 80's toyota's and since then every new toyota i have bought that had motorized masts, i had the dealer disconnect the power to the motor and reconnect it when i sold or traded in the vehicle. granted this ruined the out of town reception but saved me the trouble of replacing the motor and switched me to cd's and tapes. i hardly listen to the radio anymore but since the 4th gens have embedded the antenna into the body and rear glass, i have started to use the radio more.

No feeding the mast is easy just do as I say above and it will pull the new strip down as you feed it in. very easy di it yourself.
Here is what mine is doing, I don't know if I need to replace the whole thing or not. I bought the mast ($48.00)and followed the directions in some other posts. I removed my tire to even make things easier. Anyway, when I turn on my radio I can hear the motor drive a good 10 sec.(up) but when I turn it off it only drives about 2 sec.(down) not even close to getting the teeth of the mast all the way in. Can this be fixed or do I need to replace the whole assy? Are there any limit switches that can be adjusted for full up/full down? It almost seems like there is something shutting it off to soon when going down, I can hear the relay under the dash click twice and then that's it. Any ideas?

Let me start by saying, that by no means am I an expert on the Toyota motorized antenna. What I think may be the problem, is that there is still some of the old plastic gear in the motorized assembly. I took the motorized assembly apart and cleaned all the old plastic gear material out of it. When I put the new antenna in and turned off the radio, it drew it all the way in.
Has it always been 2 sec. when you turn the radio off?
If it has, then I'm not sure if what i mentioned above will help.
At any rate, it is worth a try and not hard to do at all.
