Radio Problem

hi new to this site i just bought a 2003 toyota 4runner. it has a aftermarket radio in. the sound comes out of the speaker on the dash and none of the other speakers then it moves to the sub in the back. it has the jbl sound system in. what do i need to do to get it to play threw all the speakers.

Sounds like the amp isn't hooked up. You need a metro tyto-01 harness to make the radio talk to the amp. I'd pull the head unit so you can see exactly what's going on back there

Im located near harrisburg and i pulled the head unit and it looks like it has its all hooked up right and the it has the jbl replacement interface
 
Maybe the hookup into the amp is bad? I have an aftermarket head unit in mine and had a buddy install it for me. The harness I got off amazon didn't work correctly. Luckily he had one that did and I returned mine. I have the JBL as well and I ordered the correct stuff, the "convertor adapter box thing" (to be super technical) that hooks into the jbl amp just was a dud for some reason.

Also, if that's not it, if for some strange reason the previous owner had the audio settings messed up on the stock HU and swapped the aftermarket in without zeroing everything out, I know that causes problems. The amp retains whatever settings where last put into it from the stock head unit. For instance, if you had your balance all the way to the right side and the bass all the way up and the volume at 5 when you removed your stock head unit, the new head unit will go in and treat those settings as its base. So the new head unit wouldnt be able to exceed volume 5, and the base and balance would stay the same. That's why the instructions say to turn the volume up and zero out all of the settings before taking your old HU out. PO could have screwed something up there.

How do you clear those settings out?

i'd definitely do this regardless, but that *shouldn't* affect it this much. It could distort it, but for some reason the amp isn't connecting with the radio and it isn't turning the amp on.

WHich harness is back there? Does it have adjustable gain control and if so, is the gain up?

Agreed. It just seems weird that it's only coming out of the front speaker. Although, if the OP doesnt have the original factory stereo, it might be more productive to replace the amp with an aftermarket setup instead of just shooting in the dark to try to find the problem. could be the harness, could be the amp itself, could even be the head unit. I would check everything thoroughly to make sure it's properly connected and if it is I would forget about the JBL amp and get an aftermarket one. The tie into the JBL system is less than ideal anyway.

Hey man, the problem I had was with that box in the first picture. the TATO adapter box thing. you could try another one of them. If it still doesnt work with that, I would think the next step would be getting a new amp, which if you're going through that trouble I would guess it makes more sense to go aftermarket. I don't really know too much about that, but do know that it will help you down the line if you decide to do any sound upgrades at all. The TATO adapter is just a workaround to get the factory amp to work, and while it is the cheapest way to get an aftermarket head unit in there, it doesn't give you the best sound quality/control. I have the same adapter pictured and my stereo is good enough for my ears, but if I was faced with your problem I'd probably just get an aftermarket amp rather than continue to mess with the factory crap. You might want to take it to a local stereo shop and talk with the guy there for a bit. Sometimes if you're nice and are willing to shoot the shit with the guy he'll take a look at it and help you diagnose it for free. Can't really tell you much else just by looking at pictures.
 
I think that its a problem with the amp not being sent a signal to turn on. Maybe chekc the amp-speaker harness connection at the back of the truck? Maybe try swapping the tato to another new unit to eliminate that as the cause
 
The PAC comes with 4 RCAs - does your single din radio have 4 RCAs in the back? AKA are all the RCAs plugged in? Any line output converters back there?
