radio won't work...antenna question

radio won't work. have check all fuses and they are good, will the radio come on even if the antenna does not come up

Yes, but you will likely get only static, except maybe at 1 or 2 places on the dial (speaking in antique terms) if you are close to the transmitters. You should hear static noise if radio is on and working. Do other inputs work (cd, aux.)?

When I bought mine it didn't have an antenna. When I pressed seek on the radio it would cycle through the stations and never pick on up.

My antenna is broken. you can here the gear moving, but not connecting to actually raise/ lower the antenna. You have to manually put it up or down. So im also curious to see how you fix yours. If you have to replace a motor id like to know what all is involved

This will not solve the OP's problem as that shouldn't be antenna based (all fuses checked, even the one in the engine compartment?), but...
[MENTION=111789]Vannnce[/MENTION] This might help you solve your problem since you are hearing the antenna motor working. If you have a broken antenna track you will want to pull the antenna motor apart and get the pieces out before you install a new mast. You don't need to take it apart as far as I did, just where the plastic track goes. Also, make sure the bevel nut actually screws onto the antenna mast (I lightly push up on the mast from underneath while threading the nut on above).

yes check the one in the engine compartment, dome light works same fuse, have no power to the radio, no sound no nothing.

Is it a stock radio? IT could also be dead if you don't find any blown fuses. Its pretty old by now, and more and more of them are dying.

As for the antenna, the motor in my wif'es was shot, so I left the antenna up, and cut all but the first section off. Between what's left and the antenna in the back side window, she gets reception just fine.

You can either replace the gears with new ones, or replace the whole thing with a whip antenna.

Time to pull the radio. Some HU's have a tiny fuse in their own chassis. Others may have an in-line fuse on a yellow or red wire or both. If you don't see any more fuses, then you need to check for 12V+ on both the red (key on) and yellow (full-time) wires at the HU plug. Then check for ground at the black wire. You need a meter or test light to do this. (These colors are for aftermarket. Toyota stock harness uses blue-yellow for full-time 12V+, gray for key-on 12V+, and brown or black for ground).

And then begin browsing the wide variety of aftermarket stereos available.
Virtually any decent aftermarket stereo unit will sound better than the stock units---especially the radio section, imo.
