Ran out of gas,fuel Guage at 1/4 tank & No red light!

2008 4 liter,Sr5,2WD,auto.
Had to have towed home after engine just quit on hwy. with 1/4 tank of gas.
No codes, decided to add some gas & it started right up.
I did a search but couldn't find any fuel Guage-sender issues.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Had this exact same thing happen! Hasn't happened since but I have made sure to fill up at 20miles or more range. No red light anymore. I think it burned out.

Sounds like the float may be sticking. The light wont come on till guage gets to a certain level I believe. I had this happen years ago on a Wrangler. I was able to give the fuel tank a good couple whacks with a 2 lb sledge and it freed up.

I have learned if you let the gas get really low in tank, you can have a fuel pump fail soon.
