Rate 5th Gen Friendly Dealers - Any on the forum

I am just curious...many of us cannot find what we want in a 5th Gen, or can find it but dealers will not negotiate.

For instance it seems our Texans cannot easily get KDSS...in CA you pay $6-10k over for a TRD, which means that probably lots of pretty boys and yuppies grab them for looks and guys who wheel, hunt, fish, and camp are not getting them because we will not pay over sticker that is just absurd and silly.

Are there any dealers on here that scan the forums, I think that would be a smart way to do business. Help connect people with what they want, build a reputation on a website that EVERYONE buys Toyotas.

Also, would it be allowed for us to start ranking dealers or contacts at dealers in this thread, so we know who to avoid that is shady? I have dealt with plenty of bozos in the last week over the phone and email. But a few super fantastic people too. Would be nice to let others know who seems to be a good contact.

Or has a thread like this already been done?

I have read several of your posts regarding price in many threads lately. Here's the deal:
1. No matter what anyone says, you will not get much more than 10% off LIST PRICE. More like 3%-7% seems to be the norm. And list price is common.
2. Supply and demand. You cannot defy this system. Why? Because right behind you there is a guy willing to pay the price you won't. Toyotas, especially LE's, TEP's, SR5P's and TRD PRO don't get discounted much. If you want a 4Runner you have to pay, especially for a TRD PRO.
3. Regional availability: Your question above about dealers is fine - if you are talking about one specific region. There are 12 regions and they all operate differently and even install different small options that are unavailable other places. You need to decide if you want to travel to save.
4. Use the PRICING THREAD. In there you will find actual prices on what people paid. PM them to find the dealer and salesman. There are some untruths in there also. Pretty sure you can never get 20% off yet a few people claim that.
5. 4Runners have some of the highest residual value of any vehicle. That is why the deals are so small.
6. Toyota does not offer the big discounts like Dodge, Jeep, Ford, etc. It's a different business model.
7. Availability. My local dealer sells about 15 4Runners a month. He never has more that two or three he has to even get put on the lot. It has been that way since 2010. It's like that a lot of places. If you need to think about it for a day or two chances are that 4Runner will be gone.

With all that said, if you are patient, follow the pricing thread, look on autotrader.com and cars.com and contact a bunch of dealers and take a lot of time then you can find a deal around 10% off list. Used prices are almost what new prices are but you have that option as well. The challenge is what people are willing to pay. You complain about vehicles going above list price? They are going above list price because people are willing to pay that to get the vehicle they want today. Again, supply and demand. I guarantee you someone will pay the absurd price of those 4Runners in Colorado in that thread you started. That's just the way it is with these trucks. I wish I could help you more but patience, research, time, making offers and willingness to travel to get a deal is gonna do more for you than anything.

Good Luck.

Thanks! I am on it, getting a real education this week in talking to dealers and members on here. I am not so much complaining about above sticker, just not gonna pay that but even the CA listed on websites are all spoken for already at any price when I call or email.

Like i said yesterday in your other thread.......Koons Westminster just outside Baltimore. Very pleasant to work with, discounted prices (similar to what 1engineer mentioned), and were respectful of my time and effort to get there.

Also have a large inventory of runners of all shapes and sizes for some reason.

I know it's tough to get one from the east coast but may be worth it to you.

Most all dealers suck because the salespeople suck. They are not knowledgable and they make their money selling leases on corollas and camrys. They don't know what KDSS is, they don't know how much a T4R can tow, they just want to ask you "how much do you want your payment to be".

Also - you've expressed in several threads now that you are trying to buy a TRD Pro which is a rare car and most dealers don't get more than 1 or 2.

Follow practical guidelines and you'll get the deal you want and you can take the car to any dealer or shop for service.

1. Contact dealer who has the car you want.
2. Get the price emailed to you as a quote.
3. Call them and give them a $500 credit card payment to hold the car at that price.
4. Set up a time to purchase the car.
5. Pick up the car.

You aren't going to find a dealer who wants to be your best buddy, sell you a TRD Pro at under invoice and throw in lots of extras to "earn your business" in California.

Look in the classified section. Someone just posted a 2015 TRD pro inferno for sale 43000 in Sacramento. Close enough to you and looks clean. Good price for used one too.

Russel Toyota in Baltimore, specifically the internet sales manager Megan Bailey (although I think she is on the sales floor now). I ordered mine when I lived in Cali and knew I was moving to Florida. I spoke with her, did everything over the phone. She was super helpful and proactive. Got me the exact truck I wanted at the "True Car"/Costco price and held it on the lot for 4 weeks until we arrived in Maryland. Kept me updated with pictures, vin tracking... etc. Everything was ready to go when we arrived. I literally took it for a 5 minute drive (it had 1 mile on it because they filled it up with gas) walked inside...30 minutes of paperwork later I left the dealership. My wife and I still own property in Baltimore so we were able to register it to that address (saved us 3% in sales tax over buying in California).

Only regret was I had to drive my Outback across country instead of my new 4runner.

Just put $500 on a grey TRD scheduled for later in the summer in NorCal

I dealt with Michael Becker of Thurston Toyota in Ukiah Ca. No hassle. No games. Great service.

I had dealt with a lot of sales people and they were full of shit. Had one guy try to give me so many pathetic sob stories so I would feel sorry for him and buy from him....

Michael was professional, courteous and went above and beyond my expectations.

You want the best price? Email all dealers within your radius and start asking for the price on a specific vehicle they have. Know what you want, but be willing to compromise on some things. This is just a starting point and you can change your mind at any time. Quotes will come in, high at first, but use the lowest one as leverage against other dealers. This process will continue for about 2 days while you go back and fourth with multiple dealers. Some will get angry and give you sob story's about feeding their children and other such BS. Believe none of it and carry on. If they can't hang then F 'em. You will eventually come to a floor where no one will go any lower. At that point go with who gave you the best deal, service or the vehicle that has the exact options you prefer. Tell them you want all of the paperwork ready to go when you get there. Keep in mind that the more willing you are to compromise on color or options the better. Bigger selection of vehicles = lower price. Do not let them sell you anything when you get to the dealership, and if this process has gone well they likely won't try as they know the type of customer you are. Walk in, find your sales person, inspect the vehicle, sign the paperwork and leave. This should take no more than 1.5 hours, and if they have their shit together, about an hour. That simple. I have purchased 2 cars in the last year for people using this technique, and have gotten awesome deals on both.
Things to keep in mind:
1: you have already extensively test driven a 4Runner (right?) -Trails with KDSS drive like Trails with KDSS and SR5 premiums drive like SR5 premiums. You do not need to go and test drive the specific vehicle you are looking to purchase. This should have been done somewhere else. They will try to get you in the dealership to "check the car out" but what they are really doing is keeping the ball in their court. Pressure will mount as soon as you show up.
2. Compromising is key. Willing to take a red one, but don't really want it? Tell them that. If they know exactly what you want then they have a barging chip because it's "the only one in this region" or some other BS. You will pay less because they are not selling you the exact vehicle you want.
3. Be polite, but forceful. The last time I did this the salesman that I chose gave me the best deal, but was not happy with me. The car was not for me and he never even thanked me for the business. Just ignored me the entire time we were doing the paperwork. F him, no repeat business in the future.
4. MOST IMPORTANTLY - the price you pay can not be compared to anyone else. "pricing threads" on this forum are complete BS. Prices vary widely by region, availability, options, taxes, day of the week, weather, whose break is coming up, hangovers and the exact alignment of Jupiter with the Earth when compared to how much wood a woodchuck can actually chuck. Seriously just get the best deal you can and don't look back. Enjoy the vehicle for what it is.

Wow. This should be permanently implanted as a banner on the Forum header. Right on.

It's all summed up by what 1E said; average is 3-5% off msrp, rare but 8-10% happens. Unique (TRDP) models = supply/demand.

If you want the best deal, it requires working multiple dealerships and putting them against each other.

However, if you want the best deal in CA, that can be tough. I work with a dealer here in Fresno and have gained trust in them and their trust. I have purchased 12 vehicles from them over the years, and sent them over 35 deals from other friends that they know came from me, as each time I help someone, I deal directly with the GM, who is the owners nephew and the Internet sales manager. They don't waste my time or theirs as they know I'll work the deal for hours to get the best price, or they can just be quick and easy, making everyone happy.

If you want to work with them, PM me and I'm pretty confident it will help you get the best price.

I totally agree with the price discrepancy even in similar areas. I had several dealers that wouldn't budge from Asking price, while I found two below MSRP. I even had a dealer in Buena Park sell a TRD Pro for MSRP (I missed it by a few hours) while a dealer 7 miles away was selling theirs for $49K.
I finally picked up my TEP in the color that wanted with KDSS for $2K under MSRP. Just have to keep looking.

I was looking for a TEP in any color but Silver. There was nothing around, shipment came in this weekend and a new one will come in at end of month. I listed the dealers' quote.
Hope this helps any potential buyers in SoCal.

Carson Toyota- Approx.- $2000 under MSRP- They have a TE no- KDSS
Toyota of Orange- $1000 under MSRP (End of the month)
Huntington Beach Toyota- $2000 under MSRP (End of the month)

Wont budge from MSRP
Irvine Toyota- Next Weekend
Buena Park Toyota- (End of the month)
Cerritos Toyota- (End of the month)
Toyota Escondido- (End of the month)
Sand Diego Toyota- They have one

I have found that using outside financing helps when negotiating to purchase a vehicle. Showing up to the dealer with pre-approved financing and no trade-in takes away two of their sales tactics. Keep it simple and let them make a sale.

I got my 2016 TEP w/KDSS for $37k plus TTL in San Diego. I had bad interactions with a few different dealers and ended up at Toyota of El Cajon. I was in and out in an hour.

I bought my Trail at Big 2 Toyota in Chandler, AZ and they cut me a killer deal. They're a volume dealer and claim to be one of the biggest Toyota dealers in the country, so they don't dick you around too hard on price, as long as it's reasonably fair.

Look like they've got about 8 4Rs on the lot now, including a few TEPs and one Turd Pro.

(They tell me that they can't get Trails here in AZ without KDSS, I'm not sure if that's true, or just a line they were feeding me......)

One thing to keep in mind is your state's Lemon Law. My state's Lemon Law requires buying the vehicle in my state. If I buy out of state it voids the Lemon Law. I had to Lemon Law a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. If I had bought out of state at a slightly reduced price I would still be stuck with it. Don't be afraid to travel to another part of the state.

My company has a very simple policy when it comes to discounts. We don't. When you discount something, you're telling customers that it really isn't worth the price it was originally listed at. Further more, customers come to expect discounts and wait for them, hurting sales and business between discounts. Toyota rarely if ever even runs financing deals with the 4runner and Tacomas because they know what they are worth and that people will pay it.

Tis is true.

My dealer sends me an email with all of the financing deals on almost all Toyota models on a monthly basis. The Taco and the 4Runner are never on there. Meanwhile, I can get 0%/60 months on most of the other models.
