this is a new t4r for me, I know I need to replace the head gasket do to an oil leak coming from the top edge of timing cover, but also their is a definite rattling noise coming from the motor at high rpm, are the valves floating or could it be a loose t chain, I checked the chain yesterday and the tensioners are in good shape, but I did not know how to check for to loose or not.

The tensioner is ran from oil pressure. Odds are the guides are fine which you can see and inspect. The tensioner is something you cannot test. The high rpm rattle based on what you're saying could very well be the tensioner. As for the head gasket, why replace it because of an oil leak? Pull the timing chain coverage nd replace the tensioner (and guides because they're cheap) and reseal everything. Revealing the timing chain cover should cure your oil leak too.

After looking at some videos on YouTube I saw that the head gasket does not go all the way to the front where the timing cover is, god what a relief to hear you confirm what I was thinking, so if I take the timing cover off I will be able to replace the tensioner and guides? How will I know if the chain needs to be replaced, this motor is super clean and a lot of the seals look pretty new I don't want to replace the chain if it was just done. Where is the tensioner located exactly ? Do they normaly replace the tensioner when they replace the chain? What would you do?

The head gasket DOES go all the way forward to the timing chain cover. But, you can seal that part with some fipg on each side of the head gasket there befor you put the timing chain cover back on. If you're unsure of the timing chain, just replace the whole thing. They're cheap and ENGNBLDR.COM, ENGINE PARTS NETWORK has good kits with the steel guides at an awesome price. The tensioner and the guides boug are located behind the cover.
