Real life comparison: Tacoma 5100's vs Tundra 5100's

Shocks: 4runner 24-248730
Springs: 4Runner tall '99's
Setting: 2nd notch
Comments: 2001 SR5 4x4, stock front bumper. They ride soft, and I liked the Tundra front setup in my previous 4Runner better. The 4Runner model shock has 4 adjustment grooves. I used the 2nd one up....so just one notch above "stock" setting. I came to this conclusion because I knew I needed to add exactly 2" of lift to the front in order to have the overall desired height and proper rake to match my rear lift. The tall '99 springs were 1.25" taller than the factory 2001 front springs. The first notch up is advertised as 0.75" of lift, and it turned out to be pretty spot on. The 3rd notch is advertised as about 1.5", with the 4th (top) notch advertised as just over 2".

I could have gotten about the same 2" of lift with my stock 2001 springs, if I had used the 3rd or 4th perch.

I imagine, a 2" front lift spring would work just fine on these shocks, on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd notch. I wouldn't pre-load a lift spring any more than that myself, but that's just me.

Ok, wow. I started this thread way back when, and here I am circling back around to it.

Bilstein does now make "4Runner specific" 5100's. They are PN# 24-248730, and I just installed them on my 4runner with some tall '99's.

I can say, after also having used a Tundra front setup previously.....I like the Tundra shock better. Don't get me wrong, the new 4Runner Bilstein's are just fine...but they are softer than what I feel is optimal.

Just my opinion, but everyone buying adjustable Bilsteins' for their 3rd gen just needs to get the Tundra model. :)

Hmm, softer you say? I'll trade you my taco 5100s for your 3rd gen specific 5100s. Because to me my taco 5100s are too stiff. I'll throw a little cash in as well since mine have a few miles. What do you say!

Tundra shocks front and back
07' Trd 4x4 off-road Tacoma coils in front
Rough contry coils in back
2nd notch
Homemade bumbers. Drawers with tools and parts.
200lbs
The ride is great. Better on dirt. Fine for a lifted truck. I too get the "pop" when turned and flex. Mostly in parking lots, while backing up. Prolly the ca bushing or rack

Hi,

How much lift does your truck have with the OME 2887 coils (center of hub to bottom of fender)?
Also can you confirm that the OME 2887 springs are at the highest notch on the Tundra Bilstein 5100? If yes, how did you do it?

Shocks: Tundra 5100'S
Springs: EMU 2887
Setting: Highest notch
Comments: First off my 1999 Limited 4x4 is my daily driver / weekend warrior. When I did this lift I replaced upper and lower ball joints, Upper and lower control arm bushings, I bought NAPA CV joints and installed high angle boots, panhard bar drop, extended brake lines, etc. I have to be able to drive my 4runner 300+ miles a week (mostly highway). So to keep the reliability of a Toyota I went ahead and did all that preventive maintenance. My 4runner drives great and the flex is awesome but when I drive over a pothole I definitely feel it. But now I can run 35's so I don't care.

I found a set of 4 Bilstein shocks and the front coils from a 2016 Tundra for sale. Can they be used on my '98 4runner?

Shocks: 5100 Tundra Front
Springs: Moog 'tall'
Setting: 1st notch
Comments: 1997 2x4, 3RZ, 5 Speed, totally stock. The Bilsteins with the Moog springs makes a night a day difference over the stock springs. The ride is 200% better than the tired stock setup, which was well past its prime. The ride is firm but supple which is great - pretty much exactly what I wanted. I have a feeling that the Moog springs are in the 'meh' range and I would be better suited to find a paid of FJ springs to match the FJ springs I have in the rear.

Where did you purchase the 3rd gen specific 5100s? Im interested to see the price

Ome 880 Bilstein 4 Runner 5100's on 1st perch. BFG KO2 265/75/16 Great ride on smooth/flat pavement. Harsh and sharp on washboard and rough road even rough pavement. So rough and sharp it skips all over the place on back roads....and have to slow down noticeably. Will even skip and move on pavement if rough and pot holed. Has no real absorption of bumps it just jolts over them and that does not help handling or traction.

Put my Michelin LT's on and it softened up noticeable but still too stiff for decent off road speed. The only way things maintain traction is tire on ground not skipping around. No question I lost off road traction and ability at any speed over 20mph.

Bilstein does not provide all the needed parts and offers no help to find them. Totally inexcusable for such a high priced "premium shock".

Thanks! how's the ride? what about the CVs? was very curious about it because the OME internet info on the 2887 indicates that it's about 15.75", so i imagine it would be very difficult to install it at the highest position of the tundra 5100.

would you happen to have a measurement of the free height and wire diameter of the 2887 coils before installing them? just wanted to confirm the internet data provided by OME.

It's definitely a stiff ride but once you break them in its really not that bad. When you are sitting that tall and running 35's smooth ride is not the intention. When I did the lift I also installed new NAPA CV's and in about 2 months the boots ripped. I installed high angle CV boots and 14 months later no issues.

Since you have new 4 runner specific 5100s and 99s, what perch setting are you on and what is your fender to hub measurement?

Shocks: Tacoma 5100's
Springs: Toytec/Eibach 620#
Setting: 2nd notch
Summary: Rides pretty rough, i have an arb front and even still it seems as stiff as ever, considering knocking them down to the bottom perch but i dont want 2" of rake so i am a bit torn.

I"m running the exact set-up with a Relentless bumper/Engo winch and it rides damn near perfect. What size and load range tires are you running and what do you have your tire pressure at?

Never heard of this tire, but the tread looks good. How is it for rock crawling at 30 psi and how loud is it on the highway?
Guess I should have specified, if i am wheeling i usually run 10-12 psi on the road i run 30 psi and they ride so smooth, take a good bit of weight to get balanced right but man they're great. They are a company outta Texas man, they had my tires at my door within 4 days, free shipping, under $600 OTD. Cant speak highly enough of them.

Their website says it can take up to TWELVE OUNCES to balance those tires :jaw:
