Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

I just drove from Dallas to Chicago, fully loaded SR5P with 3rd tow, fully packed with family and luggage. I averaged 20-21 MPG on the highway running 50 psi on my KO2s. Ride was surprisingly smooth. I need to let some pressure out down to 42 psi and see how it changes.

Has anyone else noticed their truck's average fuel economy starts to drop like a rock when the fuel level is below 1/4 tank? On the last 2 tanks my average mpg was around 20.5 on the dashboard display until it got to 1/4 tank, and then it dropped down to 19.8 when I filled up with the level close to the E. No changes in driving style or commute for the last 1/4 tank.

This tank I filled up at the 1/4 tank mark, and the tank average was 20.3, which was also my best tank by 0.5 mpg.

New 2019 TRD ORP with less than 300 miles. Dealer put a full tank of gas in, I drove it to a little over a quarter tank left and I got 18.5 mpg on the display on the first fill up. Hand calculated to 18.4X. This was 50/50 city/hwy.

2016 Limited here. Just rolled over 25k. This thing gets 17.x miles to the gallon no matter what. Towing, nothing on the roof, tons of gear on the roof, full of people, just me.

I got over 100 mpg in my 4Runner TRD Pro , on the bed of an 18 wheeler. OMG, this is a ridiculous thread over 1,600 posts on why these things get terrible gas mileage.

If you use olive oil for motor oil , your MPG will improve as your engine melts.

I have a 2017 with about 45k on it. GOBI Stealth with a rifle type case on top, 2" lift with stock size BFG KO2s @ 38psi. I checked it today and on the interstate I get about 17-18 @ 70MPH and in the city I have been getting around 14-15. Towing a 3800 lb. RV Trailer I get 7mpg @ 70MPH and 10mpg @ 65MPH. All based on the computer....

Thanks for posting this. I was getting concerned at my never-better-than 17mpg. But the at/3s, 3/2" lift, roof rack and extra armor probably don't help.

Haven’t had it long enough to get more accurate highway readings, but around my small town and outlying area 19.3. Only trip with lots of dirt, high and low range, 18.1. On a 2018 SR5.

I use an app called Automatic along with a tracker in the ODB port. Last week I did 492 miles at 38 average mph and got 21 average mpg. My highest travel week recently was 857 miles @ 20.04 mpg. I am regularly over 20 mpg. I don't do much city driving at all.

I have approx 1,400 miles on mine and am averaging around 17 mpg. Mostly “city”/ backroads, maybe 20% highways for only a few miles.

I am hoping it gets better...

I consistently average ~19.1-19.3 MPGs as well.

It does crack me up though that people load up their rigs with all types of armor, skid plates, racks, et cetera, not to mention have it lifted and running E-rated tires and are like “14-15 MPGs!?!?!?!”

Yes, more mods = more weight. Tires considerabler larger than stock without regearing = << fuel mileage. My 4 Runner is completely stock and I intend to keep it that way. The 2002 Tacoma TRD it replaced was accused of being a mall queen in the past, because I kept it stock. Until that person gave it a serious look and found the truth ...

I don't get that at all. I have a brand new, totally stock 2019 TRD ORP that has about 400 miles on it at the moment. I'm getting 16.8 max according to the computer. Been driving like a complete grandma. In my manual 98, I drive like a total maniac and get 20 mixed consistently (doing the math myself via trip gauge and fuel ups). I drive 30 mins each way for work, entirely on the highway. Varies from around 60 mph to almost bumper to bumper, but never actually stopping. In the evenings, I do some city errands, but there isn't bad traffic where I live.

I do live at around 5k' altitude, would that make that much of a difference? Have read it gets better after break in. I hope so. I want to lift it and put bigger tires and armor on it, but at this point that seems like a terrible idea, as I'll prob end up getting 12mpg, which is what I got in my 91 Ford E350 with a 460 v8, 33" tires, armor front and rear, a 6" lift, and which I drove like it was a muscle car (it basically was).

I'm at about 2200mi and get a little over 18mpg. I did swap the tires for Nitto Ridge Grapplers so I think that brought me down from the 19's I was getting before. Pretty much as I expected.

Something interesting. I visited texas a few weeks ago. Temps were in the 80's in texas. I was getting 19-20 mpg on and off highway. Came back to minnesota 30-50 degrees and averaging 17 mpg again. It's either the warmer temp, better gas, or a combo of both.
