I think you are correct. It may be part of the reason for the "factory rake" (lower in the front than the back) you see on T4Rs as well as other SUVs -- manufacturers trying to squeeze out every extra tenth of an MPG.
That and the higher rolling resistance of A/T tires are the culprits for lower MPG in my case, I think.
It's funny because I chose my tires with such care, opting for 275 Load Range C rather than the 285 Load Range Es that so many people run, just so I could minimize the MPG hit. Oh well -- best laid plans, and all that.
