Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

We were lucky enough to scoot in the '17 Limited from OK to FL for the annual vacation with 4 adults, interior cargo deck completely full, equipment rack (platform) hanging off the hitch w/2 tubs of goodies and a beach umbrella. 2,500 miles round trip.
About fell out of my seat when the first tank came back at 19.6MPG while averaging ~75+MPH straight highway. Thought "no way" until the second came back at 20.5. Tank test.
Stayed right at those numbers with the exception of the Ozark Mountains where we averaged around 18.5 on one tank. We even had one stretch of 55MPH that netted just over 22.
Thrilled. And to my surprise the trip computer was never off (higher) by more than a little over 1 MPG. (Our 4th Gen's computer was solid at 2MPG more favorable than actual for 7 years straight) For the 5th Gen, several tank tests were within .5 MPG of the computer and one tank was .1 which is just incredible.
Yes, there could be vast variations due to using different pumps but the numbers were very consistent. My theory? Believe the hitch platform was breaking up the vacuum created by the flat rear of the 4R and thus helped it glide. Because this thing was loaded down and should have been a little more thirsty. Eh, it's what I'm going with.:shrug:

2013 here - was down to about 15.4 on my Limited. Dropped the 20's, put on 17's, also put on some Michelin Defender LTX's - up to 16mpg after about a month now.

Same motor but aren't the later years a little bit heavier?

Ive been getting about 16mpg city driving with me 2016 TRD pro. Could be my driving style.

Still seeing 21-22ish with 80-85% highway. 2012 SR5 premium. 18 -19 or so if it is "around town" which for me still includes a lot of 45 or 50 mph country roads but a bunch of hills too. 17 or less if the wife drives, which is rare for a reason. She scares me and no conversations will apparently ever change that

Just filled the tank for the first time on my 2017 TRD Pro. Averaged 20.42 mpg on the first tank, which was a mix of city and highway driving. My calculated mileage based on miles driven / gallons and was slightly above the computer's average of 19.2 mpg.

Captain Obvious checking in here...The 4R really dislikes stop and go driving. There is a stark difference in mileage figures when I'm unfortunate enough to venture city/ stoplight to stoplight driving (17.5 mpg) vs. steady 40 mph around town driving (19.5 mpg). I can get some good mpgs on the highway, but if you do spin the rpms, you can see your fuel indicator dive pretty quickly. I lost about .5-1.0 mpg when I went to light, rather mild, stock size p rated AT tires.

Just filled up for the 2nd time this morning. Averaged 21.41 mpg on this tank that was mainly highway (state and county roads at 55 to 60 mph) with some interstate driving (70 to 75 mph) and a little city driving.
Have found that the car computer is reporting a lower mpg, but does not seem to be resetting upon fill up. Will have to read up on resetting the computer.

I feel your pain. Maybe with all the weight, you slipped through the wind easier due to being lower to the ground? I don't think weight makes as much of a difference on the highway as it does in the city.
