Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

The wife's 2013 GX460 is averaging 21mpg and that's checking it when I fill it up with gas not by what the dash is saying. She drives 64 mile commute round trip and probably 1/3 of it is interstate. We live out in the boonies.

Anyone else's fuel mileage take a hit with the colder temps lately?

With less than 1000 miles on the odo she's still a long way from getting broken in, but I was actually fairly pleased with the mileage before this cold snap (wasn't hard to hit 20 mpg on the highway at 70+). It's now been below freezing in North Texas for several days now, so all I can figure is the low temps+winter blend fuel is killing the fuel mileage since it's quite a noticeable difference. This was also my experience with my last Ford Ecoboost, but was just wondering what you guys have experienced.

Just before our roughly 1,000 mile round trip to Vegas/Zion National park,

I put factory sized BFG K02's on my 2018 TRD ORP and reset the MPG readout on the dash.

Prior to doing so I was driving my truck like to was my 3.5 V6 Camry (which averages 22-25 mpg the way I drive) and the MPG was disappointing.

The Vegas/Zion trip included stop and go freeway and city traffic in several spots along the route as well as plenty of hills with ever changing speed limits...

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/San...b92b167b!2m2!1d-112.956498!2d37.2501854?hl=en

By the end of the trip, with the two of us, our luggage and basic recovery tools, it was reading almost 20 mpg exactly. :lookout:

I reset it again yesterday at the last fill up and will continue to drive it like a grandma,

at least until I can see what kind of mileage it is really capable of...

275 BFG KO2, 3" lift, two people with gears - averaging 17.5MPG on a 2000-mile road trip with 90% highway and speed between 70-80mph.

66.5"x 66.1" cross section and 3,520-3760 lbs vs. 75.8" x 74.2" cross section and 4,400-4,805 lbs

There you go.

If Toyota had made it meaner, but kept it leaner, MPG would surely have even beat the older trucks.
A limber truck can get us to more places than a lumbering one. Unfortunately, the target market is people who want bigger vehicles. There does not seem to be any leaner, meaner off-road vehicle anymore; just the right ground clearance yet lean enough to squeeze through tight obstacles.

...
Maybe I need to buy an old yota for DD ha.
Yes. :)

Heck, I was even able to load 1 tandem and 2 singles on my Civic at one point.

Stock 2015 SR5 Premium 4x4... about 19-20 mpg on highway around 75 mph... Have gotten 22 mpg if I stick around 60 mph. 15 around the city since I like to hear that TRD CAI...

For giggles today hit reset on trip OD and mph dash thingie...

43 Miles and some highway driving, 17.5mpg.

Maybe if I was on highways more and cruising I could see 17-18, but mostly city driving it’s always 13-14mpg. My lifted and stick shift 3rd gen with Big steel bumper and 32s did better hah

Last 3 fillups have averaged:

16.6MPG after 330 miles.
16.7MPG after 255 miles.
18.4MPG after 335 miles.

My average commute is 10 miles to work 5.7 of which are on the highway.

Using the free Milage Keeper app

Lifted, front bumper/ winch, a few skid plates, and 34" KO2s:
-22 mpg on flat highway if I'm going 65mph, I've seen 24mpg going 57mph
-Drop that down to 17 or 18 if you go 75mph or above
-My daily commute takes me over a decent grade through the hills and I usually get no better than 16mpg if I keep the speed at 65mph, with some city mixed in
-Drive fast (80mph) and accelerate hard, I'll quickly drop down into the 13mpg range

Side note: Heading up steep mountain roads, fully loaded with gear, I've seen the instant mpg drop as low as 2.5 when hitting the gas hard to maintain speed up the incline

Over the holiday did a tank full of just city driving = low 12's even saw some 11's

Did another tank of secondary highway 45-55 speed = high 13's.
2016 with 285's

Sad to say my 1998 lifted 4wd Chevy Express with the 454ci engine on 275's gets about the same mileage 10-12.

Even with the lift on the 4Runner you'd think it would do a lot better then a 19 year old 9000lb lifted pig van shaped like a brick.

Edmonds.com says mpg testing has nothing to do with real world mpg and window stickers are merely a suggestion.

Ooh well I love them both.

I am calling BS - there's no way you're getting an average of 22 per tank for highway with 34's. Sure the computer may say that for an instant or two if your coasting

Did you regear or still have stock?

2018 SR5 Premium, driven about 2,000mi, factory gauge is accurate for combined driving. Currently getting 17.8 with 50/50 highway/town driving completely stock.

Should I expect less when I switch to 265 K02's?

i'm also having a very hard time believing some of these numbers. i always view forum members reported mpg's with skepticism, not just here but every board i've been on. it seems to be a subject that people always feel this need to inflate for some reason.

I agree with bs for some of these numbers. One time I tried my best to hyper-mile for an hour long drive, never getting much over 60, and eked our 22 mpg when I was stock other than having trd pro wheels and 275 ko2’s. But nobody drives like that all the time. Now getting about 16.5 hwy/14.5 city with normal driving. Unless he just got a unicorn toyota will be the first to advertise lower mpg than actual.

Caveat to the following statement, I am new to 4runners (and learning) since I grew tired of my JKU with 315/70 r17...never again.

In his defense, if those 34's are the 34x10.5r17, those actually measure out to be 32 inch tires. They are notoriously small. When I had my JKU, I almost bought those but balked at their $300 cost and the were practically the same as the stock 255/75r17. Someone measured them and they were 32.9 when hanging on the back and 32 under load. IIRC they are not much heavier than stock. But I am not sure I agree with the 22mpgs either (best I have seen is 19.4 on my SR5 premium with 1,800 miles so far).

Lets see if this link works:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-UzKD1h8hSxVjdBV1F2QWFleDQ/view?usp=sharing

This includes my latest mileage (as of a few days ago) from 1300 miles until now at 22k miles. I've made notes when I was towing a trailer and off-road for extended amounts of time as outliers.

Take it for what you will. I switched to the 255/75 Maxx Sts at 5k miles, added the icons around 11k miles. I didn't see THAT noticeable of change with either. Both just slightly decreased. I live in a flat, warm area, pretty idea for fuel econ.

So, just going by the numbers, I've averaged about 17.1 MPG. Taking out the extremely low numbers from when I was towing and off-road (lowest was 7mpg, a few 11-14mpgs in there from towing), that number is bumped up to around 18.3mpg. I have achieved 21mpg in a tank once and at least 20mpg a few times. All in all, I'm happy. The 4R replaced a 2dr JK with 35s, I have no problem getting better fuel econ while being more comfortable than I ever was in that.
