Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

My OBC says the average has slowly increased from mid 17s when brand new in March to 18.0. But I a only have 4,000 miles on it and never worry about mileage or smooth acceleration etc... Also, I have not done the calculations myself to verify and this number includes a few off road excursions.

All stock running gear.

Well, I'm still getting less than 16 MPG. I wonder if it is because I don't do a lot of long distance driving so the computer doesn't have enough information. :dunno:
I'm going to have to take it to a shop or something to figure this out. There has to be something I'm missing. As far as I can tell this thing is stock so I don't understand how others are getting much better mileage than I am.

Tank and a half (or so) into my '18... Split suburban/highway driving, averaging around 18.7 according to the OBC; I'm not expecting to be at "normal" fuel economy for the first few thousand miles, then I'll bother calculating it manually.

My mileage in San Diego has been really bad -- probably averaging 15 MPG. Lots of stop & start, up and down hills.

I'm just back from a 3-week road trip to Wyoming & Montana. 4,717 miles. Averaged 20.4 MPG across the whole trip. Wish I got that around San Diego!

That’s about what we get towing a standard sized Jumping Jack trailer on the highway. Took it from Boise to Dave Matthews at The Gorge over Labor Day and didn’t quite break 14. We get about the same as you with nothing in tow.

According to my computer 18.9 - this fluctuates up and down within a decimal depending on if i'm trailing or going up hills (mountain passes really).

New here, but I do a ton of fuel economy testing, and I always compare the computer's tank average value to the actual calculated value, just for grins. Computers almost always exagerate, oftentimes by two or more mpg. It varies from brand to brand, but the best way is to use your trip odometer, divide by gallons, and do that for several tanks in a row.

That said, I've observed that Toyota trip computers are more accurate than most. We tracked every fill up of a 2016 Tacoma for over 40,000 miles. MPG meter was usually a little optimistic, but usually less than 0.5 mpg too high. BTW, the EPA combined rating for this particular 2016 4x4 was 20 mpg. It averaged 18.6 mpg over 40,155 miles. I don't have 4Runner numbers, though.

Almost at 10k miles and ready for the first oil change. Mileage has been slightly dropping since new. Real curious if the oil change will help or if it is just my driving.

Once Toyotacare is up I'm switching to Amsoil as I always do.

I'm currently getting 18.8 with my TRDP. I commute 30 mi each way to / from work. I used to get about 17.5 when I commuted to / from my last job which was 20 mi each way. I can't quite explain the difference in the commute but there is a bit more "rolling" traffic in my current commute versus my last job where it was more on and off the throttle constantly. I'm pretty much stock with my suspension, no bumpers, but I do have a Gobi rack, ARB awning, and some ditch lights which increase the drag of course. Honestly, I'm quite surprised at what I'm getting now. Shortly, I will be adding a 2.5 inch lift, and likely will go with 275 KO2s. I'll be happy with 17 mpg if I can get it.

I've never been a mpg-weenie but does it seem odd that so many can have essentially the same vehicle and get such drastically different mpg numbers? Before anyone goes on a rant, I understand there are many factors which impact this number, but to hear "bone-stock" in posts and see numbers vary from the low teens to low 20's seems strange.

We are right at 5,000 miles after 3.5 months of ownership. We were seeing 18-21 mpg when it was stock, but with the addition of the Prinsu rack, 275 KO2's and a 1.5/1" lift it is now getting 16.5 mpg in town/mixed driving and 18-18.5 mpg on the highway when it isn't really windy.


Those numbers aren't wonderful but I can live with them. If we keep it I'd eventually like to go up to 34's but I fear without a regear that it will fall into the 13-15 mpg range then.

Hey fellas...so I was in the market for a new intake and was on the fence between the TRD and K&N intakes. While I was working out the details on the Gibson dual side exit exhaust with Jason B, he mentioned he had one soon to be carried on his site by S&B. After checking out the manufacturer’s site, it looked like a mix between the two. Their site has good info for those looking for numbers to compare.

Post install, it has a noticeable growl when opening it up. Under normal driving conditions it’s not even noticeable with my Gibson exhaust. I tow my boat often 200+ miles round trip and now my 4Runner doesn’t seem to be nearly as depraved of air.

Just wanted to comment in here since we are all like better gas mileage. This intake can help and price point is good. If anyone wants to try one, I'll work a better deal than the price on my site. I'm just trying to spread the word on these and it will give a nice little bump on mileage.

We're at 9300 miles and over the holiday took a 900 mile road trip. First leg we were bucking a headwind and only managed 14.7. The next 2 tanks were a lot better... 21.7 and 21.2. I was actually pretty impressed with that since I never thought it would get over 20. Cruise was set at 71 and yes those are hand calc'd. Computer is at 18.5 average.

My first fuel consumption calculation left me with a pleasant surprise, manually calculated at 11.9L/100km. That's for 625km, with a mix of country roads, freeways and city. I use the ethanol-free Shell V-Power.

Ok so I'm only at 1,500 miles with my 2019 TRD Pro (purchased in Jan 2019) however the dash is currently reading 15.5 MPG. I have filled up the tank maybe 6 or 7 times. It started at 13.5 MPG when I drove it off the dealer lot and has slowly climbed to 15.5 MPG. I figured the MPG calculation was real-time and essentially reset with each new tank but now I think the MPG calc is cumulative over the lifetime of the vehicle? I realize the MPG average for T4R is only 16-20 MPG but 15.5 MPG seems disappointingly low.

Just weighing in. 2018 SR5 premium with 5000mi. I drive a mix of streets, but the main chunk of my driving is 50mph side streets with stop lights, and 70-75mph highway. Truck computer says 16.5 average and everything is stock.

I have a 2018 stock TRD off road premium with 24,000 miles. Just got back from a trip up to the White Mountains of NH for snowmobiling. Total mileage for the trip was 507 miles. I kept the cruise control at 70 on the highway. Did some driving around town. Tire pressure on stock tires set at 34psi. MPGs for the trip? 22.0 even.

OK, just for shits and giggles, I read on the internet (and y'all know that's gospel) The truck's computer is pretty smart. In Orygun, we can't pump our own gas, so I've gotta rely on the truck's brain. One guy'll top it off and the next won't. I have manually calculated it and they're both close. My driving is rural, hwy, and some city. My 4th Gen V8 was pretty consistent at 19 MPG. My Gen 5.1 was 'round 18. The Gen 5.2 (little over 1200 mi.) is high 16's. It's supercharged, so of course, my hair trigger right foot doesn't help. Just sayin'

Ridiculous thread. So let's get my postcount to 5. Tire size, mods, and driving style all result in different results per vehicle. Start at 17 and figure less for every additional weight or aero mod. You care about mpg but want body on frame? get a new JL. that trans is smoooth and you can get 20mpg easily.
