Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Milage on 2010 4Runner
I have a 2010 TE. I was getting 20/21 around town (we live in a small rural town) and 22/23 on the highway with my original tires (highway tread). When I put on BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires my in town mileage dropped to 19 and my road mileage dropped to 20/21.

About 50/50 highway vs. city driving
modifications that are likely reducing MPG: Replaced stock roof rack with Prinsu full roof rack & replaced 245/60 R20 HT tires with 275/55 R20 AT tires.

I've been logging my mileage and fuel consumption for the last year. I get 20-22 mpg highway at 60-70 mph. The sweet spot for best economy is 55-60 mph, but that's not always practical on the interstate.
19 SR5, stock size General Grabber ATXs, RSG sliders, and usually ~100 lbs of stuff in the back.

Mine was below 12L/100Km when new with stock dueler H/T tires. Then I switched to 275/70R17 KO2 E rated at 32PSI (didn't know better) and got 15L/100Km for almost 2 years. Then I corrected to 45PSI and got 14L/100Km. Now I have stock dueler H/T back on and get below 12L. KO2 will be for winter only.

Just got back from a 1500 mile road trip to Moab, UT and the Southern Colorado Rockies in my new ‘20 ORP which is stock except for TRD SEMA wheels shod with Falken Wildpeak AT3W’s in stock size.
Averaged 20.8 mpg. This is with the truck heavily loaded and with a hitch mount bike rack with two bikes. Much of this was highway at 75mph, but obviously a great deal of 10,000ft mountain passes as well.
I did run premium fuel....based on prior experience with a Wrangler, even though not required I believe this increases fuel mileage nominally on modern naturally aspirated engines.
The truck was a great companion on this road trip. Comfortable over long distances and handled mountain curves MUCH better than a Wrangler ever could. Wonderful seats. Did some mild off roading as well. What a great vehicle.
One comment - the radar cruise control programming in a bit strange. It works VERY hard to maintain the exact speed selected, and will drop two gears commonly on the highway as a result. Wish there were settings for this, to select the aggressiveness of the cruise control. I wound up not using the cruise very often because it would needlessly row the gears and work the engine harder than necessary.

interesting. I've been driving a 2020 Rav4 hybrid lately and I found it to be the opposite. Once the person in front of you gets out of your way and the car decides it's ok to get back up to speed, it takes FOREVER to actually start accelerating. I still wish I had the radar cruise for the braking part, though.
anyway, back on topic. I'm at 28000 miles of mixed driving all over the goddamn US in the last year, mostly in UT, CO, NM, AZ, WY, MT, ID, and WA, with two trips from Denver to SC. Unless I set the cruise to 80+, or I'm in 4LO offroad, it's pretty much just 17.8mpg all the time. doesn't matter if I have the cargo box on top, weight in the truck, etc. 17.8. Reset it, start over, 17.8. In 4LO, it gets 16mpg or under. At 80-85 mph cruising, I get about 16.5.
2019 TRD ORP, all stock except SCS F5 wheels.

My 4runner with a 2.5" lift, front bumper, steel sliders and skid plates, and a roof rack gets around 1.6.6 in city driving (100% city) and 17.5 or so in light highway driving. I've seen 18 mpg once since I got these modifications and it was on a longish highway trip with a 65 mile speed limit.

I've found that if I set the cruise control to 65 on the highway, I get around 22. but only on the highway. add in any mixed city driving at all, and it immediately drops to 18 or 17.
A while ago, I drove from Denver to Vail and back. On the way up the hill to Vail going 75+, I got 15. On the way back down the hill with the cruise set at 65, I got 24.
Me and the wife both average between 16-17 with ours (stock), mostly hwy driving but the hwy is 75mph so everyone runs a minimum of 80. My mileage actually goes up in city driving vs hwy because of the speed and hills I guess. I have a light foot, wife's is heavy but we both end up around the same.

Using cruse control mixed highway and secondary roads averaged 19.1 on a 420 mile round trip yesterday. Was better than expected. I did see some periods of 22.4 :noidea: on the on-boad display with a low of 16.4 on the trip. The stated averages from Toyota are accurate. Tire pressures are 33 all round. Could make a slight difference with higher pressures and maybe with a lighter set of wheels, but for now, those are the observed stats.

I've had my brand new stock 2020 SR5 for about 3 weeks. Last week we took it on a trip from NE Ohio to Raleigh-Durham NC, all on interstates and with a lot of hills and mountains to go through. I was VERY happy to see us average just over 21 mpg.

fully stock 2012 limited from GR, MI to LOZ, MO with a ton of stop and go traffic south of Chicago and nothing but construction on I-55 I averaged 18.0 mpg. I will be doing my trip down to FL in a few weeks and hope to have the throttle controller installed by then to see what kind of economy you can get on a long stretch of highway on a full tank with new plugs.

18.9 - 19.0 for 207,000 miles. Cleaned the throttle body and MAF sensor for the first time a couple thousand ago and didn't make any difference in anything that I can notice. TB was very dirty.
