real world tire weight on mileage impact

Oh yea, I threw some Nittos on my Explorer I had, my mileage dropped, I am guessing it dropped about 2mpg or so, maybe less, but was noticeable.

I noticed because I drove a set route for taking frequent trips out of town, and always stopped at the same places for gas every time. When I threw the Nittos on, I had to start stopping sooner for gas.

I will remember this when time comes to replace my tires on my 4r.

Another member of the spandex crowd here. Except while I might log 1,000 miles on mountain bikes in a year, I log 3k+ miles on my road & time trial bikes. I know in distance triathlon, we aren't so concerned with the weight of the wheel but more about the aerodynamics of it. Once that rotational mass is up to speed, it decelerates slower than a lighter tire too so it's a bit of a wash.

It's getting that rotational mass up to speed that is harder. So I'd think heavier tires, given the same rolling resistance, would have less of an effect on highway miles and more on city miles.

I could just about say that I logged more miles on single track trails on my mountain bike this season (around 1,200 miles) than 99% of 5th gen 4Runners logged on trails. :
Yes, I wear bike shorts. Yes, I wear cargo shorts over them. I'm 52 years old! Yes, I wear bright colored shirts because that's the only way people would find me if I go over the side of the mountain...

Yes I own several helmets. One got cracked on a rock, one got cracked on a root, one got left on the bike on the back of the 4Runner in NC and lo and behold, it was not there when I rolled into WV.

So what your saying is that I need to get some big biker shorts and fluorescent topper for the rig so I can shave the extra little bit off my quarter mile? Would a wrap that looked like a biker outfit work almost as well? Why hasn't there been a write up on this in the sticky thread so we could close the supercharger thread once for all?!!!

I have presented this several times (as calculations) to people. They didn't believe me.

It takes energy to turn the wheels: More weight = more engine energy = less MPG.
