Rear Axle Broke off.

If he's your "buddy" and ripping you off so much then I would hate to meet your enemies.

Unless the canadian dollar has plummeted....

Sorry no that was with all new parts,

but with my friends parts it went to 1800$
and I decided to do my Bearings and seals on the other side and also my alternator belt ( needed it done anyways) it came up to the same price.

Yeah I know it may be expensive but what can I do, I have no mechanical experience besides oil changes and tire rotation and basic stuff.

BTW there is an ad up for an al ocked axle to axle rear for 700$ straight from a 3rd gen

I wonder if I should buy that and replace the whole thing. The thing is how hard is it to do all the electrical components for the swap. Remember im probably gonna go through as shop so more electrical and other fittings will probably cost a bunch of $$$

Also, just to clarify, the axle broke, causing your diff to lock and drive just the other wheel, until your wheel hub/broken off shaft finally worked their way out of the bearing and fell off. The broken shaft was the initial cause (itself probably caused by heating up the bearing to get it off.)

Who did your last bearing job, was it a shop?

It was a different shop that I got the bearings done, and it was looong time ago. Well that is the theory we actually don't know how it happened. but that may seem the cause. Because the last time I wheeled I 3 wheeled the rear passenger side and MAYBE just maybe on the way down that's when the axle broke. because the person who was riding shotgun with me told me she heard a snap, and I thought it was just the CV joint LOL and after that trip that's when I noticed that the locker itself wasn't engaging. That trip was suppose to be a easy to mild course but I remember that was probably the scariest part.

very steep down hill and a big dip on my drivers side and the guy behind me told me that one of my tires "were up in the air" LOL

I assume you mean a factory e-locked axle. There's lots of information on the retrofit process here, and there are ready made kits. It takes some work for sure, but I on't think it is anything too difficult.

As for swapping the parts yourself, that is far easier than doing an e-locker retrofit. Using used parts, there is not work to do other than swap out using sockets and something to drive a new seal in (detailed instructino available here). No matter your lack of experience, you can do it. The question is whether you have the wherewithall to look up the process here, and won't just give up and cry when you hit your first snag. I don't mean that insultingly, I mean that seriously.

And you could just buy the e-locked rear end, pull the axles out, and use those, then re-sell the diff/e-locker and the locked housing. That is assuming your aussie locker isn't toasted, doesn't sound like it is.

Well, if you suspect that the axle should have survived the off-roading and think they might have used a torch, then you could get the hardness of the shaft tested to see if it is consistent or if the hardness goes down near the break point. It'd probably be a tough case to prove, but at lest you'd know.

UPDATE :humble::humble:

So got the car back yesterday from the shop! Fricken finally after a whole week!, I got my Bearings and Seals Replaced, Got my e-brake to work again (Didn't work for a looong time) got the axle and all the good bits to replace it, and as well the alternator belt done.

Cost me 2400$

BUT.. the great news is that the lockers are clicking again!! Good thing I didn't go to a specialty shop to get my lockers "checked". I called one shop that specializes in 4wd vehicles and they quoted me for a FULL check up of the Diff and lockers would take a max 8 hours at 110$/hour. That's just a bit less than a grand to "check" LOL. Anyways lockers fixed, axle fixed, breaks fixed ( breaks feel awesome not as spongy as before) and new bearings and seals! T'was a good Monday!

Gots to learn how to get dirty and do the work yourself. Save time and money. Glad she is up and going again!

Ouch! That's gotta hurt the wallet. At least she's running really well again. In all honesty, this kind of break is a perfect opportunity for you to learn how to wrench on things and get to know how things work. The first time doing something is always a bit overwhelming, but nothing is more gratifying then fixing something you had no idea worked.

Nothing wrong with paying someone else to do the dirty work, but don't do cause you think you can't do it yourself. There are some things you simply can't cause you don't have the properly tools, like bearings on the axle. I only say this because I myself would tend to give up before even researching something and ended up paying out the ass. Now I try to do everything myself.

Just trying to give some words of encouragement. I bet it feels good to get it back running in great form!

Cool, as long as you are happy, that's all that matters. If you don't have a garage or live in an apartment plus its winter & got the cash... I pay people to fix my sh!t too.
