Rear axle seal help

Well, it happened again :(
anyone in the Boulder area want to help me? I'm nervous about working on brakes but would like to learn how to fix it instead of taking it to a shop.

Make sure to replace the breather in the axle. That $20 piece could be the root of your problem if everything was fixed correctly the first time.
 
I don't remember the exact date, but under 3 years ago. I already extended the breather up next to the gas filler. I'm also not allowed to do car related work at place where I live which is a bummer so I need to find a good place
 
Check for play in your bearings, if so you will ruin every seal you put in there...from what I understand this is the major contributor to seals going out. The breather is an issue too.

Only a shop can press the bearings, unless you make a special tool or buy one and have at least a 6 ton press. If you have ABS it even more challenging, your best bet is to let a shop take it...it will be a lot but how many time do you wanna replace seals and shoes every time to loose one.
 
Wish I was closer, I just did this on a buddies 4Runner.

Also, the seal is super easy especially if you don't have ABS. Buy an extra one just incase you damage the first going in...ask me how I know :)
 
Make sure the breather is new, regardless of where it is.

It isn't hard to remove the axle from the housing; pressing the bearing in and out plus removing the exciter ring becomes fun. I took my axle with the old bearing in it to a shop with new outer seals, ring, and bearing. They charged me $65 per side for replacement in 2010.

There is a nice write-up on how to replace the drums brakes on a Tundra that is identical to a 4runner. I will see if I can find it.

I did get a new breather when I extended the line, don't think I messed it up haha. Thats not a bad price but I think I'm gonna check a couple shops around me just to be safe.

So you did seals about 3 years ago? Did you do bearings at the same time?

I don't think the bearings were done, just the seals and brake shoes. I had the spare shoe until someone decided to break the window and steal it... like who steals a brake shoe?! :shrug:
 
OK, someone broke into your 4runner and stole a brake shoe? WTF? Please tell me the ingrates took some other stuff to justify their act of stupidity.

Both sides leaking? How does the pedal feel?

Ok well I'm a little confused. Currently the brakes are fine you just have a bad axle seal. Correct?

If that is the case I strongly suggest you get a reputable shop in your area to do seals and bearings. If you don't wait too long the shoes maybe able to be salvaged. Doing seals again without bearings is a waste of money in my opinion.

Sweet thanks for the link! They also took my change drawer, and tried to get the radio but somehow couldn't figure it out (I was in RI)

Only the driver side is leaking, pedal feels the same as before I noticed the leak. I'm not sure how long it's been leaking but I just drove from ny to co so I don't have the highest hopes for them. I'll go look for a shop tomorrow

It is the axle seal leaking not your brakes right?
 
This may not be the most correct thing to do, but I'm gonna see if it's just a bad inner seal. I picked up a new seal,oring, and breather but I've never bled brakes which is why I'm hesitant to pull it apart right now. If anyone would wanna lend a hand I'd be very great full and would provide beer and food (or something along those lines)
