Rear Bumper Option

I believe that a member on here (whom I can't remember) ran into some guy in Moab that had the rear bumper. The guy with the bumper is not on t4r.org, so it was asked if he could take pics, and he posted them on here awhile back.
I believe that it is a custom build, and not sold by any company.

I jacked the pics so if I ever have the $$$ I can refer to them for my rear bumper build.

That bumper design is one of the worst ever. You can see the damage from it hitting the body and tailgate. LOL Way to close.

if you look close, my guess is that the bumper came after the damage occurred. which is why lots of guys finally put a bumper on. LOL. nothing like closing the barn after the cow is out. I like the angles and with some tweaks it could be even nicer. Time to get out the card board and start playing. Great departure angles for a plate bumper, and it doesn't have to be designed to be to close. Worst design ever? not even close. ;): pun intended
 
I am telling you from experience that the bumper has hit the body and tailgate on that truck. If you like I can take pics of my smashed tailgate from my bumper.

I am not commenting on the style..I could care less. Tucked that close on a 3rd gen 4runner rear is begging for damage.
 
Agreed rockdawg! Look how rusty the damage is... it is obvious that it has been put on after the damage. And if a rock had crushed it into the sheet metal, don't you think you would see some damage to the actual bumper?
Your idea of a well designed rear bumper must be very different that mine, if that is the worst designed bumper ever?
It probably was the stock bumper that did that damage initially, if that is what you are trying to say.

its very true that the bodies on our runners move a lot because of the rubber in the body mounts (one of the reasons that they ride so nice) and we have to be careful of putting bumpers too close. But I think there are some really nice things about this bumper, style aside. the angels on the rear would be more likely to slide up a rock than just hit straight on. No design is perfect but of all the plate bumpers Ive seen this one seem most suited to the rocks I drive out here in the west. Hopefully the original builder won't mind if I use his design as a base to work from.

Yep... hes right... the 3rd gens float at least a few inches on their frame under normal driving. Real bumper makers know this. anything tucked that close will cause damage to the body.

Theres a reason there are gaps in all the rear bumpers.

Maybe Gerdo, Glen Yoshida, Scotty or Big John (who have all made bumpers for the 3rd gens can chime in as to the details.)

Looks real nice Socco! Of course you've increased your departure angle significantly, except for one small thing...your tail pipe is still in the same spot. Id cut it off after it goes up and over the axle. Otherwise you'll bend it up into the frame and it will make cool noises. ;)
 
That Savage Bumper is a good deal but man $160+ to get it to me? I'm not sold on that, yet. Addicted only charges $90
 
That is around the price I was quoted for delivery when I quasi-purchased it(rear tube bumper) on their website.
I was on addicts website, but they must not have images or a page dedicated to the rear bumper design... my guess is it looks very similar to what Scotty is running on his SA runner?

Good advice. I built mine with at least 1/2" of clearance on the sides, and about the same on the hatch. It has .... (actually i think its the body that moves) either way. the bumper has contacted the body on the sides and hatch and dented the body up in a few spots.

Im guessing its the body flexing because my bumper is welded on with gussets and everything and it still hits.

I wasn't aware they made a rear bumper. I was simply comparing similar size and weight shipping quotes between their front and the Savage rear.

The thing is I hate how rectilinear these bumpers are. I am actually leaning towards a savage off-road rear bumper. It looks like it has the best approach angles and is only 95lbs. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a tire carrier, but that can always be solved with a welder.

I wish someone would start making something like this with a tire carrier. Is anyone sick of all these squary, big and blocky rear bumpers?

Besides the awesome bumper, anyone else notice that he isn't running a panhard bar and has some funky stuff going on at the UCA's.

I honestly didn't even notice how old this thread was. I saw the image on google and the first thing I noticed besides the bumper was the suspension setup. Hopefully someone can find out what happened with this build, and if there is any build thread somewhere.
Better than starting a new thread though.

The bumper I make has a similar sloping profile to the bumper pictured. It slopes up right from the end of the frame rail so there is essentially no clearance loss:
