Rear bumper / Tire carrier questions - for those who have em~~

Soooooo.

I'm getting ready to fabricate my own rear bumper / tire carrier and I started to lay out the design and figure out how I'm gonna mount things up.

My question for those who have either had a bumper made or made one themselves:

There is a rear crossmember running between the two frame rails at the back of the truck, effectively it IS the bumper currently. On the aftermarket / custom bumpers, are you guys cutting these out, or building on to what is currently there?

NEVER cut the rear crossmember frame. Its what makes this truck! Plus you add a huge deprecation if you where ever to consider selling it.

Making a rear bumper for this truck is now easy task if you want to get it right. Make sure you allow plenty of room for flexing. Cant wait to see this!

EDIT*** We build around the frame using 100% pre existing factory bolt locations. In other words if you decide to remove it, it's no hard task where as if you where to weld it on and/or cut into the rear crossmember frame..errr good luck!

Thank ya sir. Exactly what I was looking for. I have a pretty good idea of how I am gonna do it and definitely see those nice threaded holes to use.

MeBe4running - you have any up skirt photos showing how the bumper attaches to your rig?

I'm gonna start tearing it apart next weekend...:barf:

My bumper will most likely be a welded on affair. Luke of 4x4 labs has built a beautiful rear for the 4th gens which he does cut the rear cross member out. I know he can do a bolt on one too but thinking mine will be getting cut out as well. When I go talk to him next week I will get some clarification.

Now I know this truck will be with me for quite some time so I am not really worried about re-sale value.
