Rear Cargo Door Strut Replacement

With the added weight of the sound deadening along with the age of my struts, my cargo door no longer wants to stay in the fully open position. This of course has resulted in me banging my head on the back of the door just about knocking me out cold on more than one occasion. It happened again this morning. Grrrrr.

I've perused the various threads about the Monroes, Strongarms and ultimately the "then" $160 per pair OEM replacements. None of them really stood out. Read a lot of mixed reviews on their ability to hold the door open any better than the OEM replacements. Did anyone on here find a solid replacement?

I got strongarms, they don't lift the gate all the way in cold weather. Warm weather they are fine. Either way, get the 6815's, not the 4286. I got the 4286, described as OEM lift; the 6815 is described as stronger than OEM. Might work better for you. $48 for the pair.

I have had very bad experiences with aftermarket struts. Worked fine in summer, hold nothing in winter, or plain not work at all. I got a used OEM strut and with just one installed it held up better than non oem's. That being said I could not find myself spending that much on OEM's and now I just have learned to hold it up.

get the 6815's, not the 4286. I got the 4286, described as OEM lift; the 6815 is described as stronger than OEM. Might work better for you. $48 for the pair.

I've had some trouble with mine as well. Attempting to diagnose.

Mine are going out as well, I have to lift up the door or else it won't open by themselves, however once in place they stay and thankfully I no longer hit my head as much now it's lifted.

My pops drove a Ramcharger Prospector ( best badge ever by the way) and the rear lift on that baby was heavy with a Capitol H, he would get sick and tired of replacing them so he just clamped down on the bar with a visegrip once open. Seemed to work for him, until he got frustrated enough to buy new ones.

Someone needs to make a dual strut kit for each side.
