Rear coolant leak

Hi

I have a 1988 4Runner 22RE Automatic. I have a slow coolant leak coming from the rear of the engine. It looks like it may be from the cylinder head rear plate or the metal coolant tubes that run around the back of the engine. Does anyone have an idea of which one it is most likely to be? I don't even know if there is coolant behind the cylinder head rear plate.

I just got done building my 85runner 22re, theirs some differences
between our motors but, you should have the coolant pipe and the plate on the back. The gaskets for either are pretty cheap, I don't think you have anything to worry mechanically, just fixing the leak, if you haven't done so yet.

Replaced the gasket of the rear plate -> what a PITA, but the leak it still there.

The rear coolant pipe won't come off without removing the head and the leak is very slow so I'm holding off doing it. I guess the leak could be from a crack in the head or the head gasket or the coolant pipe. I really wish I could see better back there.

yeah, that sucks... I know atleast on my 85 you can take that rear coolant pipe off with the head on, but I did it with the engine out of the vehicle, clearance may be an issue. If it makes you feel any better, when I built my motor, I used an aftermarket timing chain set, and the tensioner jammed all the way out, so in the first 5 miles my chain ate through the tensioner and just started rubbing on the metal backing of the tensioner when I found what that "supercharger sound" was.

So I tried changing it out with only removing the timing cover and leaving the head on, and ended up crimping my head gasket. On the better side of things, it only took me about 3 hours to pull the head off and slap the new gasket in.

So if your leak gets worse it might not be a bad idea to just do the head gasket, and maybe replace the chain while your at it...

I actually replaced the timing chain and water pump just recently. I left the head on and it worked really well with no leaks or other problems so I was lucky. This is another reason I am holding off taking the head off.

1988 4runner 22RE

Hey everyone, im new here, just signed up today. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some 411 with my problem. 1988 4runner 5 speed with a 22RE engine. I bought it in November 2010 with 157,777 miles. When I turn my heater on I hear the sound of trickling water but nothing is leaking inside the cab. When I drive with the heater on, my resirvoir fills up completely and overflows and the tempurature gauge never reads correctly. I've flushed the radiator completely, filled with new coolant, parked at an incline with the heater on and tried to top off the radiator but still not having any luck. I was thinking that there was air in the lines but now im not so sure. Any ideas to what it could be? thank you!!! daniel

I have had a few leaks from back there, one was the back side of the head gasket, another was the rear cover and the third was one of the header tubes from the intake manifold it had come lose and it would leak a little bit, but it would follow the tube all the way to the back side, and yes you can take both tubes off with with head on.

Sounds like you heater core is toast, are you losing any coolant?

yes it looses coolant but only if I use the heater. I have just been leaving the knobs to cold and re-circulate and its fine. The temp gauge always reads cold unless i drive on the freeway for about a 1/2 hour then it reads that its going to overheat but the motor runs normal and doesn't smoke or anything and the radiator is full. I have a new temp sensor to put in just haven't had the time. Since i bought the truck I've flushed the radiator, changed oil and filter-water pump-3 belts-fan clutch-thermostat-PCV valve- radiator hoses and cap-front and rear diff fluid-transmission and transfer case fluid-new cap rotor plugs and wires. Need help with overheating

Okay...this is my first post also and need some advice. I have a 1996 4runner 3.4. I have a overheating problem that has a lot of people stumped. So I am counting on you to help me out. I had blown head gaskets at 207k miles so I replaced the heads (re-manned with Cams, lifters etc) water pump, thermostat (OEM) fan clutch, radiator, condenser, belts, and it is still overheating. The top hose is hot and the bottom is cold. It runs fine when the heater is on at idle but overheats under a load. I have tried to "bleed" the system by raising the front end and using a funnel that attatches to the radiator cap hoping this lets the air out of the system. I think its a vapor lock due to the fact that I don't see any leaks, white smoke, oil is clean, etc. By the way this thing runs and sounds better than it every has. My mechanic thinks that the aftermarket gaskets I bought are leaking around the fire ring. I ran a block tester today and saw no signs of gas leaking into the water. I also took the original head gasket and the replacement gasket to the Toyota dealership and he said it looked fine. I changed out the radiator which the local parts store exchanged for me at no cost. I have tried everything I know and need advice from some of you on what my next step is. I am trying to get this ready for my 15 year old. He really wants this runner. thanks

are you losing coolant any were.. plus it would prolly help if you were in the right forum this is for 1st and 2nd gen t4rs not 3rd gen.
