Rear Diff Breather

I extended my rear diff breather on my 5th gen TE from the axle itself to the gas filler area like I did to my 4th gen SR5 4WD. The first picture shows the stock breather in place. The second picture shows the stock breather removed and the tubing barb fitting that replaced it in the rear axle housing.

I put teflon tape on the tube barb fitting and screwed it into the axle housing. Attached 3/8" fuel tubing with a small hose clamp. I tied the tubing to the suspension link (not sure of proper name) using a cable tie (near bolt head and bracket to left of KDSS cylinder) and made a lazy loop to the plastic trim behind the rear tire where I tied it again with a cable tie.

Fishing the tubing up to the gas filler area was a little tricky. First you have to remove the fuel door latch by removing the screw and then the latch itself. From the inside tool compartment, you can reach the back of the latch and squeeze the ears that hold it in place and push it out. Once these are off, remove the circular metal wires that hold the rubber in place at the outer lip and around the filler tube. Then you can run a coat hanger or something down to the bottom of the fender to attach the tubing and pull it up.

I cut the rubber to the lower right of the filler neck and attached the new breather fitting with a hose clamp(below). After reinstalling the latch and circular metal wires, I duct taped around the hose to minimize dirt entry into the tool compartment inside the fender.

In doing this mod, I discovered that the rear locker housing has a breather (just in front of the rear axle) that is extended to the frame crossmember (just behind the rear axle). Why Toyota did this while leaving the rear axle breather on the axle is not clear to me. I am thinking that maybe I need to use a "tee" to tie the rear locker housing breather into the new elevated breather.

Let me know what y'all think. Other than cutting the rubber around the filler neck, everything can be undone if needed.

I previously documented the rear axle breather mod above, see this link:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...unner-modifications-write-ups.html#post528748

Tonight I pulled it all out and added a tee fitting (1/8" x 1/4" x 1/4") to tie the rear axle and rear locker together and route to the gas filler area using 1/4" tubing. I placed the tubing above the filler neck this time and perforated the rubber between the filler neck and the inner wire retainer to prevent binding of the the tubing. There is already an oval hole there that I assume drains gas overflow or water from the filler area. I cross slit the oval hole to fit the 1/4" tubing better. This time, I passed the hose from the filler area into the jack compartment by making another small slit above the gas door latch. I sealed around the tubing with silicone to prevent dirt from entering the jack compartment. With this routing, you can use pretty much any size filter (within reason). I used an inline fuel filter with 1/4" fittings.

The procedure is basically the one documented in the FJ forum works (SCUBA DRIVER MOD: Breather tubes - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum), except that you will need a smaller filter or breather cap if you terminate the vent tubing in the gas filler area.

Part #'s please as well as what type (thickness/diameter) of rubber tubing you used to extend the breather

Get's lectured if you don't search. Get's lectured if you search and bump a 4 year old thread. Lose, lose :violin:

I don't recommend putting the breather in the gas filler area. That rubber seal around the gas filling tube is there for a purpose. If you put the breather in the filler area and stretch the rubber seal than you will see a whole lot of dirt in that area after wheeling. I personally do not like seeing a crap load of dirt around the area where I put in gas. You will most likely get some dirt in the tank when filling up the gas.

Whoops - I searched and it was the first one that came up... DOH! thanks 1engineer for the guidance. eddiebx - thats the way life goes

I'm not sure how you think dirt is going to get there. If you do it like I did the seal integrity is maintained. Regardless, the other side of the fill compartment seal opens into the jack compartment - click my link (the link 1engineer inserted) and you will see where I fitted the breather line through the grommet into this compartment, thereby maintaining a good exterior seal there as well. This 4Runner has been wheeled a lot and there isn't a "crap load of dirt" in the fill area.

Yes your approach seems to be the best way to do it.

I have seen some Tacoma/4runner guys stretch the rubber seal around the filler neck and just stick the breather hose out there. This will cause dirt to get in the gas cap area.

Oh!

I haven't seen that before, but yeah I agree - yuck!

Probably the best way to do it is to carefully route it to the engine compartment with the other breathers, but I was too lazy to go through that much effort.
