Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit

Any updates here?

Yes! It's been a while since I've posted, but I've been trying to get a few things taken care of first.

The original post has been updated to reflect available kits and pricing, as well as pictures.

As far as status, there are a few things going on.

On 26JUN I placed an order for some specific boxes that I cannot get from my local Post Office. I still haven't received these boxes. I contacted USPS last week and was told that the order is still in processing, which isn't right. So they were looking into it for me to figure out why the order hasn't cleared processing. I need these boxes to ship the kits, so hopefully I'll have them soon.

On 30APR I ordered a bunch of parking brake cables. Apparently I ordered more than the manufacturer had available. I told the distributor to send them as soon as they came available and I've received a few shipments, but my entire order has not been fulfilled yet. I contacted the manufacturer directly and was told that the cables are backordered until the end of August.

I'm also working on producing the hard brake lines for the people who have responded to my messages.

With that being said, as soon as I get the boxes in I have around 20 complete kits that are ready to go. I'm reviewing my order information to make sure I have everything correct and then I'll be contacting people for information to send invoices.

That all sounds wonderful! Hopefully you are able to get everything you need from the post office soon. I am very excited to get this kit!

Just a few weeks ago I finished rebuilding the rear axles due to leaking axle seals. I went all out for brand new rear brake hardware and drums. I wish I had seen this first! Would have been the perfect time to do this swap. :cry2:

But why not both?? I have the TBU and it is SO much better!
Reading way too many conflicting and iffy things, the deeper I dive into it. Like ABS troubles, wheel fitment issues, mushy pedal feel/trapped air/trouble bleeding, warping still occurring, etc. Seemingly for every person praising the TBU, there's one knocking it, with no real rhyme or reason as to who/why, or as far as I can tell (outside 01-02 owners having a notably harder time, it seems, due to the TRAC/VSC I would assume).
Also wouldn't mind quad discs - I've had drums in back all my life. Would be a cool thing to show off to other T4R owners

The brakes on my rig were total crap when I bought it. They vibrated under load and faded pretty horribly (which was disclosed by the seller and one of the reasons it was cheaper), so the TBU was one of the first things I did. I didn't realize that anyone had any problems with it until after I had already done it, or I supposed I may have thought more about it.

But in researching it, it seems to be one of those things that have happened to a few people, and a lot of people are scared of it as a result. As you said, there doesn't seem to be a surefire explanation of what causes the problems. Regardless, I haven't had any problems and the improvement was massive, so you can add a success story to your research! I also have a '98, so as you said those troubles might not be as common.

Awesome to hear midcoma, bummer about the boxes though. Just keep me posted as all I need to complete this is the parking brake kit. Your brackets have been staring me down for a bit and complaining that they are not installed yet lol. The updated pics are sweet. How does the parking brake mechanism attach to the 4runner?

Really considering this over a TBU

If I had to pick one or the other, I'd probably go with the TBU. You'll get more noticeable performance benefits by upgrading the front brakes. With that said, I'd be glad to add you to the list if you decide you want a kit :thumb:

If I knew ahead of time that you would be waiting for the parking brake kit to do the install I would have waited and sent it all together :lmao:

The bracket will still mount the same way my original bracket mounted. You can see pictures of it in post #3. All mounting hardware is included and I'll provide instructions.

I can't PM but would like to be added to the list for the conversion, parking brake and line kits.

You're on the list. What year is your 4Runner and what color options would you like for the brake lines?

I received a shipping notification from USPS today for the shipping boxes I need, so hopefully they will arrive soon.

I have family obligations this week that prevent me from getting brake lines made and kits packaged, so I plan to accomplish that next week and be shipping the first week of August. I'm excited to be getting these kits out the door

Jaysen4runner: I'll contact you later today about your kit.

Blackdawg: We'll work out a few more details for your application via PM.

Awesome! I have waited this long, a bit longer is no big deal to me! I appreciate all the work you have put into this for us!

midcoma yes it wasn't a planned delay of the install, been out of town for work. Hindsight is 20/20. PM inbound.

FML. I just got laid off. If anyone wants my place you can take it. If not I'll honor my original obligation.

Who wants shiny new parts?
midcoma Let me know if you get any PM's requesting my kit. Thanks for understanding.

AntsyMo a kit just came available for you if you're ready to order. Check your visitor messages for info.

midcoma any idea when the later groups orders could be filled? I think i am 24 on the list currently.

Thank you!!!

Last word I received on the parking brake cables was that they are on back order until the end of August. So I’m not expecting them until sometime in September.

With that said, as people either change their mind about ordering a kit or don’t respond, I’ll be moving on to the next person on the list. So it’s possible you could end up in the first shipment depending on people’s responses.
