Rear Disk Brake Conversion Pt 1

I just went and got my hands on the calipers they are perfect the e brake will hook up easily. Now I'm off to find a vented rotor

If I'm not mistaken I think the front vented rotor off a 1st gen 4runner will work it is 18mm.. Hub diameter is 100mm and the Montero is 108mm. So I'm wondering if 8mm is going to be a huge difference. I hope not seeing that you can use these rotors when using Toyota calipers for amdisc swap anyways.

dont know how i missed this thread till now... but as soon as i get my starting issue figured out, i will be doing a disc brake conversion it looks like... dibs!

sorry guys. I know I'm lame. I now have all the parts to put together the ebrake and hope that in the next two weeks to get it done.

If you would like I can make some brackets for you for free I need to jump on this ASAP since I bent my backing plate when I changed my wheel bearings. I'm probably going to jump on this next weekend. Have the calipers already just need to get a line made or use i think 200sx.

thanks. I think I have everything I need. All I need to do is cut and ferrel one cable and then put everything in the truck. Just gotta get it done.

yeah if you can make the brackets that would be awesome!

I was gonna point you to this thread in that other thread that you posted in. I'm currently gathering the parts for this and plan on trying it on my 99 in the summer since it's winter now. It looks pretty feasible from what the OP's write up looks like. I guess the issue here is that custom mount that he made and that he used those washers to space it out I would cut a metal tube or something else but it doesn't look too hard.

It isn't to hard and yes I had planned to put in spacers instead of the washers but never did. NOW this showed up today because I joined the bent rear axle shaft flange club.

So my plan is to run the brackets on the opposite side and weld on my own mount so I can still run my mustang calipers and Montero hats. Also I will finally get my ebrake installed. I just have to finish up two other projects that are taking up my whole carport. LOL. But hopefully I will begin to work on them by the end of the week.

Any other updates in this? Both of my rear axel seals are now leaking. Is this the wise move to choose and why?

It is a fun conversion but I can tell you it is not necessarily an answer to the rear leaky seal problem. They are two differing issues. If you are not a tinkerer then it probably is not a conversion for you but if you like to jump in and play with stuff and wheel in a place where mud is an issue or if you need a little more braking power for towing small trailers then it is great. It is not super cheap because the initial parts cost and then all the little things like upgrading the master cylinder (still on the list for me) and getting the ebrake to work. Im not trying to discourage you on the conversion just making sure you really know what your getting into. HeHe :eyebrows:

I was wondering if you upgraded the master cylinder or not. A month ago some guy posted on here asking about which one to get to upgrade because he swapped in landcruiser straight axles that came with disc brakes and he got it answered on another forum and gave me a link. He swapped(it doesn't bolt on though) in one from a t100 and so far it looks like it's working for him. I'll find the link and post it if you want. The price to do this for me isn't as expensive since I work at a parts store I get auto parts at cost.
