Rear Disk Brake Conversion Pt 1

I need to do a rear disk conversion soon. Next time you head up here with the 3rd gen, I'd like to look at your setup. I have an extra axle housing and axle shafts so I can do all the work on the side.

Also I've got a very light duty plasma table that will make quick work of the brackets.

I haven't heard that but I can say I've got a lot of miles and all of them are on 35's so I wouldn't worry about the bearings. :guitar3::guitar3:
Glad to hear they're holding up well. I may be doing this in the near future. Thanks for the write up.

All the best ones have rear disks!
Well, if you have them they must be cool. [emoji23]

I had read somewhere that the increased braking pressure from disc brakes would eat the bearings on semi-float axles and that was why toyota never gave us factory rear discs. You've been running them since 2012 though? A set of bearings every 4-5 years doesn't seem to bad. I wonder if the bearing wear isn't as much as it's made out to be.

I doubt it as they were factory fit on the Landcruiser Colorado/Prado, which has the same wheel bearings, diff carriers etc, shares most internals and has an almost identical rear axle casing.

Good to know. I had just remembered seeing the above information in another thread/forum a while back and wondered.

I will definitely let you know next time I'm coming up. This has been a weird year, I just had a total knee replacement 6 weeks ago and will be having another in July but I will be up before then :car: Hopefully I will have done my rear full float conversion by then also. So I may have a set of cut backing plates and axle shafts that we could make short work of the conversion. He He

What rear disc brake setup does your truck have? Details, Details!! Love the pics!

2000 Landcruiser Prado, loads of pics on it in my build thread!

Cheater!!! LOL No fair using an axle not available to us here in North America. That would be a great swap! Nicely done!! :becky::becky:

Thanks!

Don't forget my truck wasn't available here.. so its totally fair lol.

Sorry wasn't trying to thread hijack!

I actually need new bearings anyways so I could potentially help you finish the full float conversion and then we can work some sort of deal for those axle shafts and other parts.

Also got the plasma table clothing today, made a low profile diff skid for the front.

So I had to do rear axle seals (been leaking for a while now) So I thought what the heck I'll do a rear disk conversion. I was actually inspired by some 1st gen guys on Pirate.

Parts list

Hello RockDawg

I am doing the conversion now on my 91 4runner. I purchased the 2001 Montero sport rear rotor, which both napa and autozone confirmed is the exact same rotor as the 1994 rotor you used. I also purchased the mustang GT calipers. The calipers, even with pistons pushed all the way in, are not big enough to clear the rotors.

I made sure I go the Montero "Sport" rotors like you said as well.

Also, I cannot find "Part 2" of your thread that deals with the parking brake issue. Please assist. Thanks!

That is strange. the only thing i can think is that the 2001 rotor is wrong. 2001 is a 3rd gen Montero where as the 94 is a second gen. I would go back and tell them you want to compare the two rotors. As for the parking brake it is not done yet. I don't think it will be hard just haven't got it done.

Let us know.

Sam

I'm using the Mustang calipers and 05 4Runner rear rotors. Haven't mocked it up yet, but that's the plan. The Mustang calipers shouldn't be too hard to set up with e-brake cable.

Hey Sam....

Just wondering....

Did you have to change the MC or the booster when you went to these calipers/discs in back?

Just trying to figure out if I need to budget for a Wilwood set up or something out of a Tundra or similar. Some guys on Pirate were swapping in Tacoma boosters with Tundra MCs....but I think the bore size wasn't significantly different (like the metric equivalent of 1/16").
