CAn someone either point me to the thread or tell me how to figure out what rear end I have in my 97 t4r?

The chart I did find doesn't have the code for japan made vehicle but the code comes up for the American made runners. However clearly states that it is Japanese made.

Drivers door ID tag by bar code look for:
A/TM AO3A = 4.10 gears
AO4A = 4.30 gears with locker
dependant on Auto or Manual
Call dealer give them VIN.

I have the code for the 4.10/7.5 gears I was just confused because the code doesn't come up when I look up the Japanese made..

Don't know what to tell on your search results, all 3rd gens were made in Japan though. Country destination could be causing what your seeing.
Some search engines give you the option to choose EU, US market when selecting frame number.

It is my understanding that you cannot just rely on the door code as sometimes it is wrong (different gear ratio then what you actually have).

If you need to know what your gear ratio is, you'll need to do the spin test. That is the only way to know for sure.

No idea where I got this but I had this in my file of stuff, try this and verify with spin.

This. Supposedly the codes are unreliable. Do the spin test to be sure. It'll take you 10 minutes, and potentially save you a lot of grief and cash
