I did a search but couldn't find anything on this topic. I'm hoping that someone else had this issue and there's an easy fix before I start tearing apart the rear door.
Recently I had this experience:
Passenger "ok, I'll just get my stuff out of the trunk and go"
Me: "great, hang on, I'll come back and close the hatch."
Passenger "Oh whatever, I know how to close a trunk"
Me: "Wait, it has a....
Passenger (slams rear hatch so hard that the dashboard vibrates and I hear an electric "gear-skipping" noise from the back hatch)
The next time I tried to open the rear hatch, it was completely jammed. I would touch the rubber button and I could hear the internals cycle, but it would only let the door open a little bit -- I guess if there was a dual latch system, only one latch was opening.
I was able to coax it open by locking and unlocking the door switch a few times and gently opening the tailgate a little and then pushing it back down... I have no idea internally what this accomplished but I was able to get the door open and closed and then back home.
For the next few days everything was fine and I more or less forgot about it, but this morning it started jamming again, but this time I just folded the seats down and reached through instead of messing with it.
So my questions are thus:
1) Is there some sort of safeguard for the electronic latch for the times when people who won't listen slam the hatch with all their might?
2) Is what I describe a known issue with a simple fix? I'd like to know before I completely remove all the door panels to look for a part that is loose or cracked
3) Is it possible to somehow disable this feature and just make it a regular plebian non-electric latching door so that I don't have to worry about people messing with it and ruining it? (Generally this is the approach I have to take with everything I own)
