New Rubber grommets for aftermarket rear hatch liftgate support shocks?!

I just got 2 of these from Amazon for $47.50 delivered...

StrongArm 4286 Toyota 4Runner Liftgate Lift Support 1996-02

I took 1 of my old ones off and the rubber grommet that keeps the pivot at the top tight and quiet is falling apart.

I asked the Toyota parts counter and they showed me the screen, they don't ever sell them separately from the shocks.

If you've already replaced these with aftermarket shocks, did you find new grommets somewhere?!

I'm thinking most used ones I could find, would be falling apart as well...

Anyone know what size of grommets to get? I ran without them for a while just fine but now it makes noise every time I close the hatch. Sounds like crap.

You can probably measure them and find something compatible from McMaster-Carr

Rubber Grommet for liftgate strut

I found a suitible replace ment for the grommet at lowe's. it works perfect for a replacement. You have to work it on but it works. It is a grommet with OD=5/8" by ID=3/8". Part# 881255. Hope this helps!

I went with a nylon bushing. found the right OD, drilled to get the ID needed.

Lowes has a rubber grommet that fits well. Part# 881255

I have the same issue, was thinking of trying a GM door pin bushing kit, or perhaps NAPA has an assortment of brass or nylon bushings.

I am in the process of replacing the liftgate struts on my 2001 4Runner, as the original ones do not lift the hatch anymore, and barely hold it up especially when the weather is colder.

Of course the replacement struts do not come with the grommets that go around the upper pins, but I believe after a bit of research that a 1/2in OD x 0.328in ID x 1/2in nylon spacer should work nicely to replace the cracked original black ones.

My question is about the lower pins: there seem to only be a washer on the pin, between the strut mount and the bracket, but no sign of a grommet anywhere. Are they just long since crumbled and gone? I would think that a washer would not provide any friction protection between the strut and the pin.

Should I try to find something for the lower mounts? Does anyone have info on how these are supposed to look like? Any original struts only come as a full kit that includes the brackets as well, and all the information I could find online here and elsewhere only mentions the top mounts.

The bottom doesn't have the bushing, just a wave washer.

I have not tried them for this application, but Harbor Freight sells a cheap grommet kit.

Thanks for confirming, and also for letting me know that the washer is supposed to be wavy and it was not just mangled. I was worried as to how it could have gotten so bent...

Thank you! That's the method I'm using for the upper mounts, but I was wondering whether the lower mounts also needed some sort of bushing. It looks like the washer that's in there is all that's needed.
