Rear Hub Assembly

I'll be tackling the rear hub assembly this weekend and wanted to see if any of you out there have done this job. I replaced the front bearings a few months ago which required a machine shop to press out the bearing and press on the new one. Is this also the case in the back as it came as the entire assembly? What tips do you guys have? Haynes manual doesn't really show anything on this subject that I can find.

What type of problem would that be? I just have the hub assembly (link below showing the new part purchased)

Just spoke with the Toyota dealership and they are saying that there is also an ABS snap ring and sprock that need to be cut off and replaced......???? If anyone has replace the hub assembly on their 4th gen 4runner I would love to hear what all was involved and how it went for you.

Bearing noise...

This part is rarely changed if ever. It should last the life of the vehicle...Maybe if you do a LOT of off-roading where it's submersed in mud...but in general these should last the life of the vehicle.

Non-serviceable rear wheel bearings are one of my biggest gripes about modern cars and trucks, very frustrating. Even my Land Cruiser has them, what happens if I go through deep water? Normally I'd repack the bearings and replace the diff fluid.

Apparently these are drive-to-failure.

I think the ABS ring is a toothed ring that the ABS sensor "sees" to calculate wheel speed. You have to heat it and/or freeze the hub to get it on/off.

Even though the 4runner (and many other SUV's) are designed for off roading...MOST never take it off a paved road. I'm going to say well over 90% never go off road.

I've yet to have a non-serviceable wheel bearing fail on me...even after 300k miles. My last pathfinder was over 400k miles and the wheel bearings were still fine. Why add cost and expense to a product that's a waste for well over 90% of it's owners.
