Rear license plate trim garnish question

Are the rear license plate trim garnish pieces interchangeable for the 3rd gens? I'm looking to put a 2002 garnish similar to this one on my '96. Purchasing online sight unseen and would like to confirm before purchase.

There are 'early' and 'late' style license plate garnishes. So, 96-98 and 99-02 are compatible. They may bolt up between the two versions, but the outline on the hatch is different.

The chrome one in the photo was 02 only, but the shape matches with the 99-02 style.

I have an older style trim on my '99. It bolts up perfectly, but the older style trim is slightly smaller so you will see a little more paint from the hatch.

I am having a diffuclt time finding info on removing the garnish on 99-02. I have a replacement piece that will hiold my lock cylinder. I can't see how to get at the two screws holding it in place. The clips and bolt are relatively evident.

Any help appreciated. Forum>AI.

Not sure if it helps but one of the comments in this thread kinda helps. Removing the inside panel on the hatch, using needle now, trim tool, and 10mm going around the trim panel.

I need to replace mine soon. the sun ruined it beyond the point of being paintable.
